How many here are going to replace their SD DVD librbary with either Blue Ray or HD DVD?

The prospect of doing so is the main obstacle to my adopting either format. I have far too many to replace, and I don't want something that will make those look bad.:(

I made the decision that I would buy as many new movies in Blu Ray as possible, but that I would only upgrade existing SD DVDs if I came across really good deals (e.g. through Amazon BOGOs I was able to upgrade Pirates of the Caribbean 1 & 2) or if the original was a bare bones release that had less than adequate video/audio (2001: A Space Odyssey). Considering our DVD collection is in the neighborhood of 300, it would be an incredibly stupid waste of money to attempt to upgrade everything.

Yeah, I can see your point with you having as many DVD titles as you do.

Already in the process, but I agree I am not replacing every disc. Some movies I don't really need to have in HD...like most comedies. I mainly go for movies that were rated highly for picture and sound quality for those titles I am interested in. For the most part, if it is a title that I really enjoy I buy it; then either sell the SD version or give it to one of my kids.

Seriously, I have no life.

Like some others, the new ones I like as keepers for sure and certainly some of the older ones that are watched more often or are kind of classic. Then, perhaps when the sales are great, or when they come on the used market or Blockbuster decides to buy and sell used as they do with standard.

Yeah, I said the same thing when it came to replacing my VHS collection with DVDs, but eventually, I replaced everything!

I'm guessing that initially, I'll replace the "important" titles first, then replace the lesser titles if I come across great deals for them.

Of course, this is coming from a cat who hasn't bought into either format just yet.

cheers,

Well, with VHS it was a night and day difference, so that was a no brainer. I immediately replaced everything that was available (which was practically nothing in in 98). As soon as it came out on DVD though, the tapes were sold off.

I am currently about 40% new, 60% old or never owned, and of those maybe 20% are duplicate titles I already have.

From now on, I am only going to buy only top-notch masterpiece or near masterpiece BDs & HD DVDs with perfect or near perfect Video & Audio quality. I just notice that "Bladerunner" is the first ever BD & HD DVD to receive a Perfect 5/5 stars on everything (Audio/Video/Story/Content). So I will have to buy this one. No way am I going to be replacing my entire SD DVD collection. I'm going to keep my BD & HD DVD collection tight and small so that when 4K video comes out in 10 years, I can easily replace my BD & HD DVD collection!:D

The problem with that approach (and the main reason I haven't seriously considered it) is that watching those few high def DVDs might spoil you so that all your standard DVDs look bad. I already find it hard to watch a poorly mastered disc after seeing several good ones.

That is so 100% true!

Now a lot of the newer SD DVDs, especially dual-layer, look pretty good upscale to 1080p. But yeah, I tried to watch the HBO's Sopranos on SD DVD one time, and it looked so TERRIBLE, I had to just turn it off!

But the newer SD DVDs like Rome, Tudors, Deadwood, The Unit, Heroes, Lost, etc., look pretty good.

That is the price we pay.

I just saw "Brotherhood of the Wolf" HD DVD (UK). Compared to the SD DVD version, it looked a little better. But compared Pan's Labyrinth, DH 4, Bourne Ultimatum, etc., some of these so-called HD movies don't even look that great. So when we compare a great Video/Audio quality HD movie to a mediocre SD DVD, it becomes unbearable.

On HDD, Ratatoullie was the first to receive a 5/5 across the board. Just seeing the trailers on commercials, the new transfer looks quite good compared to the previous SD DVD for Bladerunner though. That movie is a favorite of mine and my copy is scheduled to arrive today :)
