Okay folks. I'm a dummy:( . I just bought a cheap DVD player last night with Sub-woofer and 5 small speakers. I got it plugged up and running....but I want to use the speakers through my television. I love the surround sound, but right now it only works when I use my dvd.

When I watch a dvd I have to use my TV remote and hit the "Input Select" button. The TV is a Daewood, the dvd is a Curtis DVD5028, and I also have a digital cable box. Can someone guide a girl (electronic illiterate) on how to get the speakers to work when we are just watching tv?

You're looking for a red and white audio output from the cable box to a red and white audio input on your receiver (what you have the speakers hooked up to). It doesn't matter what the input says, but you will need to change the input selector on the receiver to that input when you want to hear audio from the cable box. You will also hear audio from the TV as well. That can be turned off on most TVs. Look in the TV menu under audio settings to turn the TV speakers off if you don't want audio from both.

The cable box is sending stereo audio, so you will only hear 2 speakers, not all five (unless you are watching certain HDTV programs which are broadcast in 5.1). You're receiver may be able to convert the stereo signal to a 5.1 signal. Check for Dolby Pro Logic II decoding on your receiver - this will convert the signal if you want to hear sound from all 5 speakers.

......To change the input selector on the receiver (where would that be on the DVD player?).....

Sorry Renea, I didn't take a look at your setup before I posted my response. I just assumed that it had the inputs you needed. Now I see that this is the most bare bones setup of all time. You don't have any inputs available on your little system. You are stuck with only outputting the DVD sound. Sorry :( .

so there is nothing I can buy or attach to this to make it work?

You're looking for the flexibility and funtionality of a receiver. Your system is completely void of any functionality other than the DVD output options.

I would return the setup you bought and find a cheap HTIB (home theater in a box). Ask a salesperson to show you some HTIBs with audio inputs for TV output. Like I said before, if you want to 5.1 sound from your TV, you will also need an HTIB with Dolby Pro Logic II decoding. That should be pretty standard with most HTIBs nowadays I would think.

Do some internet searching for cheap systems like this and if you have any questions just do some more posting. Welcome to the forum :) .

Here is an example of an HTIB that would work for you. I'm not endorsing it, but it does have what you would probably want. However, it does not have a built in DVD player. You would have to buy a DVD player and connect it to the receiver. That means buying more cables. You can find many systems like this. Many of them have built in DVD players I believe. Just do some looking around.

It has analog audio inputs and Dolby Pro Logic II decoding.
