I am looking to buy a 6.1 Surround Sound Speaker system for my family room which is 13 x 16. I would like to buy some floor standing speakers for the front left, right,-rear left, right. I need to do something else for the center speakers. Any thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated!

You just need to get out to look and listen to different speakers. No one can tell you specifically which speakers to get. Also, assuming this is mainly for HT, you really need to get a dedicated front center speaker for your front speaker. Center speakers are designed with the assumption that they will be primarily handling dialog in movies. Standard tower/bookshelf speakers work great as the front center in Hi-rez music only systems but not so much for movies. The rear center is not really an issue.

Do you have to use towers as your rear and surround speakers? They are not realyl needed and the rear and surrounds don't handle as much of a "load" as the front mains and center channel. If it were me ( ), I would save some money on the rears and go with actual "rear" surrounds and put that money into the front mains and center. That's were it really counts.

As far as what speakers, what kind of budget are you looking at.

Speakers...

I really don't know a lot about speakers... I currently have in-wall M & S Waveguide speakers in my house now but I am moving. I am debating if I should fish wires up the wall. I just fished all my speakers in October in my house now. I am just looking for personal preferences about what kind of speakers, cost, which ones to use where, etc.
Thanks

I'm certainly no expert, but one thing you will hear a lot in these forums (and I consider it good advice) is that you should consider timbre matching for (at least) your front three speakers. So, when you purchase your floor standing speakers for the front, you should ensure there is a matching center channel speaker in the make/model line by the same manufacturer.

I believe audio is a very subjective experience. When you determine your budget, take the time to listen to several brands in your price range. You'll find some good recommendations from the people in these forums. But your ears will be able to tell you which speaker to buy better than anyone here can.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Some lines I like in terms of decreasing price.

high end: Energy Veritas 2.3i
high-to-moderate: Vandersteen 2 system
high-to-moderate: Paradigm Studio 60 CC570
low-moderate: Energy C-series
low-moderate: Boston Acoustic VR
moderate: Dahlquist QX80A
budget: Athena

Subs: PSB, Hsu, SVS, Velodyne DPS and up, Paradigm PW2200 and up

I'm less of a fan of the B&W speakers than most.
I despise anything Axiom.
Not a fan of Definitive Technology (bipolar towers)

Not a huge room. I'd go with 4 nice bookshelfs and stands, matching center and with the money you save from non-towers,get a good sub.

You know, I recently had the opportunity to listen to some VanDerSteens that a friend bought, both before and after hooking up his Rotel amps. I thought they were nice on just the reciever, but I was pretty impressed with them when he juiced 'em! Good soundstage, lotsa bottom-not the most sensible pick if you have pets with claws, but still certainly worth a look/listen.

Bryan...that being said, go listen to as much as you can...

Thanks for the advice

I don't want to spend more than 500.00 per pair for the speakers.
Here is what I am using for now, if this helps?

JBL250P Subwoofer
M & S Waveguide Speakers both Ceiling and In-wall
Denon 3805
Samsung DVD..Not sure of model.
IR repeater to hide components in closet.

Hope this helps

If you really still want towers, I would second warpdrive's suggestion of Athena. You can't really beat them for the price. Especially now they are being discounted. Ducker just got the top of the line towers for a freaking steal at Best Buy. Athena bookshelves are also very good for the price. I really think Athena is the speaker to beat in the sub $500 range.

Check out www.audiogon.com. You can get some real deals on stuff there used through the auctions. You might be able to buy a used speaker that lists for like 800 with your 500 bucks.

Just a thought.

Agreed - Athena, except what scares me is that Best Buy quit carrying them. Check out some Venturi's - the DV84 for towers and DV62 CLRS for the center. They have a 7 year warranty and carry the best center channel I've ever heard. I own an older pair of DV62's and the sound is amazing.

Klipsch RF-25 floorstanding
The Reference Series continues its legacy of powerful sound and visual elegance with the RF-25 floorstanding loudspeaker. This new model offers the same dynamic quality, superior sound, and cosmetic appeal that made the now legendary RF-3 a best seller for three years in a row. Combining those traits with a smaller package and a more affordable price ensures that the RF-25 will also become a fan favorite.

The RF-25 produces lifelike sound through its dual 6.5-inch, magnetically shielded woofers and a light weight 1-inch titanium diaphragm tweeter loaded with an exclusive Klipsch square Tractrix® Horn. The advanced horn design dramatically increases efficiency and allows the loudspeaker to produce more output using less energy. This improves reliability and minimizes audible distortion.

The woofers still feature Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic™ cones but are now made with an anodized aluminum that makes them harder and more dent resistant than ever. The anodizing process converts their inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range. Driving these cones are large, video-shielded magnets and high-temperature, long excursion voice coils, which are highly efficient, and deliver deep, powerful, articulate bass without breakup or distortion. The RF-25 also has a flared rear port to minimize turbulence noise.

The RF-25 is an astonishing performer due to its crossover network that utilizes top-of-the-line internal wiring, polyester film-type capacitors and an air-core inductor all mounted on a high-quality fiberglass epoxy circuit board. These premium components ensure proper driver blending with minimal degradation of the incoming signals.

This attractive model brings a new level of sophistication to the audio world with a low-diffraction sculpted baffle and magnetically attached grille. Unique magnetic posts give the grille an easy-on and easy-off quality. The RF-25 has outrigger feet that can be fitted with adjustable rubber pads for hard wood floors, or leveling spikes for carpets. The spikes have a sonic advantage over the rubber pads because they improve bass response by coupling the loudspeaker to the floor.

The black and light cherry wood grain vinyl finishes on the RF-25 give it a sophisticated appearance that complements any home décor.

This remarkable speaker provides listeners with the ultimate sound experience by delivering the true power, detail and emotion of cinematic spectacles and concert performances.

Bowers & Wilkins DM603 S3
Slimmer than its predecessor, the DM603 S3 is a 2½-way floorstander. The lower 165mm (6½-in) aluminium cone driver features B&W's mushroom construction and is restricted to bass frequencies only, where it operates in parallel with the Kevlar® cone bass / midrange driver. The reduced excursion demand on the bass / midrange unit reduces distortion, not only in the bass, but also in the midrange when accompanied by heavy bass. The result is greater clarity at higher replay levels. The tweeter response in the ultrasonic region is improved for Series 3, recognising the needs of the new high resolution recording formats.
The well extended bass response and substantial output capability make the DM603 S3 fully at home in medium to large size rooms. In home theatre systems, partner with the LCR600 S3 centre speaker.
