Floor speakers on a budget

Hi everyone,
I'm looking to add a set a floor speakers to the B channel of my Denon avr-2805. I will use them exclusively for music (mostly rock, some R&B/rap) so I am looking for good bass response. What would you recommend for ~$700 a pair? I know that's not a big budget but I'm starting law school in the fall and can't afford to spend a fortune on this. Thanks.

Paradigm & PSB both make some fine speakers in this range. Speaking of Ebay, there's a pair of Paradigm Monitor 9 speakers being auctioned currently (not by me, I might add), and the price is under $150 at the moment. Those are some very nice speakers, and will likely go for far less than retail. Even new, the Paradigm Monitor speakers are within your range and are excellent speakers for the price.

You might also want to check out Athena's Audition AS-F2; these are really nice speakers for the price and have received really good reviews. Audio Advisor has a fantastic price on them right now. Best Buy also carries them (but don't let that worry you- just so happens they're decent anyway! :D ).

PSB's image line has a few nice floorstanders in that range. TAS has raved the Image 5T particularly, giving them an Editors Best Buy award. They give you pretty decent bass and nice sound in a pretty compact package.

Monitor Audio's new Bronze B4's are also a good choice in this price range. They have dual 6.5" woofers and will crank out good bass. I mention this model specifically because I've found the MA speakers to be a superb synergistic match for Denon electronics.

The Infinity speakers mentioned by a previous poster have gotten pretty good reviews, too. You can usually get a decent deal on them as well.

I myself am not a big fan of Klipsch speakers (can't stand the "horn sound", YMMV). But they do have high sensitivity & good bass. You can probably get something in your price range, and they'd be worth a listen, especially if you're more into rock & hip hop. They sound pretty edgey with brass & strings, IMOHO, but that isn't an issue with rock.

I've tried to list mostly models & brands you can find in a store. If you're willing to buy from internet-only companies, you might want to try some Axiom's. They have a great rep & a good money back return policy.

There's probably several others I'm forgetting, but that ought to give you a good start!

You might also consider Boston Acoustics, B&W, Vandersteen, Phase Technology and Energy. All of the these companies make entry level towers in your price range. B&W and Phase Tech might be just a bit over your range but they make some really nice speakers. Go out and listen to as many as you can. You never know which one will blow your socks off.

If you're looking for bass, the psb image 4T is pretty amazing, especially for the size. They're discontinued, therefore a great deal used.

Dahlquist QX8A

I have a couple of pairs of Dahlquist QX8A towers available in factory seconds right now at $699.99CAD. List is $1199.99.
Factory seconds are new in the box and with full warranty but you will find a cabinet blemish somewhere if you examine them closely.
Specs are on the Dahquist site here:

Shoot me an eamil at marc@audioshop.on.ca if you think you might be interested.
I'd highly recommend them even at the regular price. Smooth and natural sounding.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for your input. I've narrowed it down to two choices...Klipsch RF-35 ($699) or PSB Image 5T ($475). I'm leaning towards the PSB's but I'm not sure yet. I have no way of comparing the two as no local stores carry PSB's. Decisions, decisions.

Of the two you mention, I definately prefer the PSB. But you'll be listening to them, not me! ;) Certainly the PSBs are very good for the money, and you would probably be pretty happy with them. If they're a couple hundred bucks cheaper, even better.

Even though they're discontinued, you can still find them new, and at a great price, (like I did), at http://saturdayaudio.com/

You're quite welcome. If you decide to explore Saturday Audio contact Andy Zimmerman, he's the owner, email him at Andy@saturdayaudio.com. They are one of the best online companies I've ever delt with, great customer sat. BTW I am in no way affiliated with them, just a happy and satisfied customer.

If you're looking for alternatives, Paradigm and Mission speakers match up great with Denon as well.

I'm glad you included the link- I'd forgotten about Saturday Audio! That website was in my favorites, but when I bought a new PC at the end of last year that one didn't make it to my new computer.

Yeah, the 6T would really be a good deal at that price. I don't see how you could go to far wrong. The 6t has pretty good bass & great dynamics.

Justin,

My son has the image 5Ts. I recently purchased the Axiom m50ti's. They both have similar configurations. I have heard both. I believe the Axioms have better base response if that is what your looking for. You can read a review of the m50s over at designtechnica.

Ok, I've done a lot of thinking and reasearch and I've narrowed it down to the PSB 5T or 6T. I'm leaning towards the 5T because of the price difference (475 vs. 700) and the fact that I have a small living room (apartment). Does everyone agree that the 5T's would be better, or does the extra woofer on the 6T make enough of a difference to warrant and extra $225?

Thanks again

Consider the size of your apartment and placement (will they be away from walls...). I have a pair of 4ts (which I'm soon replacing) because there is too much bass.

I've heard enough higher end models to know that it is no fault of psb's design (although I am now looking for more refined sound), but rather that my room is just too small. Don't overdo it!

I'd probably opt for the 5t. Save the money, and if you need more bass down the road put that money towards a good subwoofer.

Thanks guys. I just found a PSB dealer within reasonable distance so I think I'll give them a listen. I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

Justin:

I purchased a pair of blemished cherry 5T's from DMC-electronics.com in February for $500. They have blemished pairs for $519/pair now. I couldn't find anything wrong with one of the speakers and the other one had a very small tiny nick not even noticeable. David is the sales person and is a very friendly informing person to deal with. I am very happy with the sound of the speakers. I have them bi-wired to a NAD T752 as a pre/pro with a Marantz power amp. I use the 8C for center and 1B for surrounds and SVS PB1-ISD sub. There is plenty of bass on the 5T's. For 2 chanell music I don't even need my sub. Soundstage is good and the midrange and highs are very good also. For the price they have to be one of the best sounding tower speakers for music or HT. If you first audition them new at a store the bass may not be very strong. But once they are broken in, then you will really feel the bass extension and output.

I want to thank everyone for their recommendations. I ended up getting a pair of black 5T's on ebay from an authorized dealer. They were a floor model that had never been played and I paid $470 for the pair. I finally got it hooked up how I wanted a few days ago (passively bi-amped on my Denon 2805) and they sound amazing. I originally just wanted them for stereo use, but I like them so much I ordered the image 8c and a pair of 1b's yesterday to replace my existing home theater setup. Next, I'll update my sub. It does an ok job for now, but I would eventually like to get an SVS. Gverde, how do you like your PB1-ISD? I am considering that one and the 20-39PCi. Cylinder or box doesn't really make a difference to me.

Once again, thanks you everyone who responded. I couldn't be happier w/ my system (that is, unless I already had a better sub ;-) )
