Can someone please explain this feature to me and why it would be beneficial? I tried another av forum and was completely ignored. I am new to av, so please keep it simple.

Kind regards,
Kinga

Maybe you should provide more information, like what amp and other gear you've got, why you're worried/concerned about this.

If it refers to the audio negative path not being at chassis potential and the audio circuitry being balanced, it's likely that it was designed for pro/commercial applications, but you really need to know that we don't read minds, so we have absolutely no idea what equipment you're asking about.

'Floating' the audio prevents problems that come from the electrical service's neutral and ground wires not being perfect in their configuration and/or connections- if you see anything about ground loops, this is what it prevents. Balanced circuits send a stronger signal and it uses two symmetrical circuits to achieve this and since they found out a long time ago that twisting wires results in far less noise, the added benefit of the wires being twisted AND the stronger signal allows much longer cable runs with less noise.

It's not really necessary in a home theater/audio system because the equipment tends to be in close proximity. Also, if the source devices aren't balanced and the preamp/power amp are, the benefits are reduced- it only works best if the whole system uses this configuration.

I am so sorry. Obviously I didn't have enough coffee when I made that post. I was referring to the Yamaha A-S1100 Integrated Amplifier. I really need to re-read before I posted that. Again, my apologies. I am in the process of planning my theater/cave, and I would like to hear everyone's opinions as I continue my planning. Thank you.

So, my plan is: a Kaleidescape movie player, 24TB server. I really love the Kaleidescape system. I am also planning on the Sony VPL-VW665ES for my projector (may have to save for a year on that one, but I want it), and the Screen Innovations Black Diamond, Zero Edge 1.4 with LED lights for my screen. Probably 115" will be what I can get away with. Hubby gave me the garage for my theater room. Guess he loves me. LOL....or wants it for himself....hmmmmmmm.

Just a heads-up, if you didn't know already. Kaleidascape is no more, so likely no future support on that.

Here is info included at the beginning of the S&V Review:
As was reported over the weekend, Kaleidescape, the firm that virtually launched the at-home movie server after its founding in 2000 and survived many a fight with Hollywood and its copyright enforcers to survive and evolve through its 16 years, has officially shut down operations. Following is our review of the company's new Strato 4K movie player, originally scheduled for our October print issue. It is offered up early here with full understanding that the Strato may not be available for purchase or supported going forward.

Such a great product and company, I will have a little faith that someone will take them up. I have been keeping up on the news. :D

If I had the revenue, I would take up their mantle myself. Just going to have a little faith that we have not seen the last of Kaleidescape. :)

I still don't see much reasoning behind your gear picks....why do you think balanced is an advantage in your situation?

That's why I an asking about it here. I don't know if it would be an advantage, which is why I asked if there was a benefit to it. My first choice is the Yamaha CX-A5100 for my pre amp and the MX-A5000 for my power amp. If my new room size allows, a 7.2.4 set-up. I am learning as I go. Hoping this site will help. So please forgive any ignorance I show.

The basic advantage for long interconnects with a balanced connection is for long runs, mostly unbalanced connections in a home setup will do just fine.

With the way it is looking, it looks like the run is going to be about 40ft. So unbalanced would work?

Likely either would work. You may have less pickup of noise with the balanced connection but maybe not.

And you should still include your reasoning as to why various "features" will be meaningful to your use....

My speaker choices are all RBH reference series. I am so in love with the SV-1212PR, so, one sub may suffice. I have a sub, but I really want the bigger one.

It needs to make my heart pound when I am watching my action movies. I want to feel the bass, but have clear vocals. Guess I am a little confused about what you are asking me. I really just want to do this right. While doing research on amps, etc., I was not sure what some of the "features" the sites listed for their product mean. Yamaha lists one of the features as, "floating and balanced". Since I did not know what that meant, and could not seem to find an explanation that cleared it up for me, I decided to try here. Does that clear it up?

Get great subwoofage and the ability to manage it then. Don't read too much into advertisement copy, that will just truck things up.

ps the forum changed my word of choice to "truck" which I find comical

Can you please expand on "ability to manage it"? Thanks for all the great advice!

Not so fast, popcorn breath- Kaleidascape just got a large cash infusion, so they're back.
