Best brands for 55-60 inch flat panel TVs

The quality has greatly improved for both plama and LCD TV's in the last few years along with their lower costs. Personal preference will always play a large part in the decision to purchase any particular model. That said, I still prefer a high quality plasma TV which has (IMHO) a more film like quality and better black levels when compared to LCD TVs. However, the LCD (LED) TV's have an advantage in that many models reflect less ambient room light and can produce a brighter picture. My suggestion is to look at the new Panasonic ST and GT plasma models. Samsung and LG also make plasmas that are good at lesser prices. I would get a full 1080 HD set at the larger 55-60 inch panel size while smaller 40-43" plasmas look fine at 720p.

While a good plasma is still the better looking product out there, depending on the room you are putting the TV into, you may want to opt for an LCD.

LCD, whether it is standard, or LCD backlit (in a couple of versions!) has seen significant improvements in recent years and is typically a good bit brighter than your typical plasma TV. In a dark room, it can actually appear to bright, but in brighter rooms, like open floor plans with large windoes, the LCD can be a great way to go.

I would recommend Panasonic for plasma... But, Samsung has some great product out this year which closely competes with Panasonic.

For LCD, I would stick with Samsung. I'm very impressed with their 8000 series units and haven't had issues with the ones I've installed.

Typically, people go to small for their main family room display, so if you are thinking 55", you likely could get away with a display over 60" pretty well. But, this is depending on viewing distance more than anything else. From 12' - about a 60" display is the smallest I would recommend.

I just bought a Samsung 55" LED - 6000 series Smart TV. I had a Sony Bravia 50" LCD, which I did like quite a bit but had an opportunity to upgrade size and technology. The picture is on the Samsung is AWESOME. The 120hz motion feature is nice but takes a bit to get used to the imaging. I did not do the 3D version as I am simply not a 3D fan.

Before buying, I looked at several plasmas, LEDs, and LCD at several local and big box retailers in Chicago area. I certainly could have spent more but for the price I think the picture is great. I also think the current LEDs are equal to or better than a lot of plasmas in terms of picture quality. Personally, I do not like the fact the plasmas run so hot and tent to cost more to operate (though I think they are getting more energy efficient quickly).

IMO, HDTV technology seems to trend from one manufacturer to the other over the years. I think Samsung LEDs and Panasonic plasmas are the better models right now. I agree with the similar point MBXTRIX made previously in this thread.

I highly recommend the Samsung LED Smart TV line. Very good picture, great prices, nice refined look (only about 1.5" thick with very thin perimeter bezel - some have practically no perimeter bezel). The additional features are nice as well - internet, netflix, etc.

Hope this helps.
