Here's some nice deals on key chain flash drives and sd memory cards. I picked up a 2gb flash drive and 2gb memory card the other day at the local store.

Buyer Beware,

I know these are great deals.
but we picked up about 20 of these for various people in our office for when they had meetings to transfer files etc....

we are down to about 1/3 of them.

Some I will chalk up to users not disconnecting them from their PC's properly but others were just rubbish...and weren't retaining data or corrupting data.
Don't know if we got a bad batch or what.
I don't normally bash products publicly but this one was a bad purchase.
then again Memory is getting som cheap now a days.....
Just the thought of having critical files on these things makes me cringe.

Personally I have a 4GB Micro Curzer by San Disk running U3 which lets me run a lot of applications just off it. and it has been rock solid and have some recovery ability when it is disconnected improperly.

While I didn't have the same problems Bigfishe had - the area to latch to a lanyard easily broke on mine and now I need to buy a new one :(

They come with lifetime warranties (but that doesn't relieve Microcenter of selling junk). So far mine has been ok - I'm only transferring photos at the moment.

Bigfishe, are you talking abour the stick drives or memory cards?

Seems like a good deal...

Even if they are cheap drives, the 1GB SD card is a great deal just to keep in the camera bag as spares.

As a far as pen drives goes, you have to think of even the best ones as disposable. They're really only meant to transfer data easily. Not as a permanent storage device for vital information.

And just as a fair warning. Be careful with "freebie" pen drives that are given away at conventions and such. They have been know to carry viruses and spyware. A top security consultant was hired by a large "not to be named" banking firm to look at their security. The consultant loaded pen drives with a data mining software and sprinkled them around the bank employee parking lot. The software was set up to mine certain info from any computer the pen was plugged into and e-mail it to the security company. They had hits within hours from employee computers, even from executives. And this was just a test. Imagine if this was a real incident.

just plain luck seeing as how they basically use the same or similar memory technology (I know that's not always true).

I've never owned a memory card that went bad but I've seen plenty, and I had my first ever thumb drive, a 256mb Sandisk Cruzer go nuts a year after I got it. They replaced it and I still use it. I now have 3 more Sandisk Cruzers of various generations (and sizes, one each of 512mb, 1 and 2gb) and they've all been great.
