I have a 4yr old Samsung 61" DLP, model HLR6167. I paid $300 for someone to install a new lamp. Now the Digital board that has the 2 component and 1 HDMI hookups has failed rendering the TV unwatchable. I can repair the digital board for $550 - ouch! ; OR , I can buy a brand new Mitsubishi 60" DLP for $1200 with 3 HDMI hookups. I like the 60" size and DLP technology gives me a cheaper price. SO, should I FIX IT OR BUY NEW?

Just my vote, I would upgrade -- I had a similar problem with a 55" Mit diamond where the power supply went out. It was 3 years old and cost me $500 to fix power supply. It has gone strong for another 2 1/2 years. Next failure I replace; it does not have HDMI but is used in the media and gaming room.

Good Luck!

I've heard much worse than $550, man. My friend's dc'd DLP needed a new motherboard that would have cost more than the TV.

That said, I vote new, but not another DLP. RPTVs are typically much more prone to failure than flat panels. There are some AHers here who work in this industry, and they can corroborate.

58" S1 is going for $1673 from Amazon/6thAve. If you add the cost of just one single replacement bulb to the Mits, the price will be pretty darn close. Two bulbs, and the plasma is cheaper. Your PQ will be much better, your offaxis viewing will be waaay better, and that includes both horizontally and especially vertically, and I would venture to guess the greatest improvement of all could be shadow detail.

That's my vote.

My brother has a Sammy DLP he got from Costco, and last year's entry Pana 1080p plasma. There is no question which display has the superior pic.

Repair or replace...??? :confused::eek:

It's not an easy choice. But to drop another $550 into a unit that is 4 years old and already outdated technology? Say you fix it, but then in 1 or 2 years are you going to want to replace it but hesitate because you sunk $550 into it just 1 or 2 years ago?

Ok, another question to ask yourself is do you have the money to go flat panel? If yes, I'd go flat panel. If not, then repair it as that's better than no TV.

I know what you mean by size. I have a 65" Hitachi RPTV that is 6 years old. Love the size of the picture and it's been a great TV. But it has no digital tuner, no HDMI inputs, just one DVI or component combo and an alternate component input. Everything else is all low-def inputs. Do I hate to replace a perfectly good TV? Yeah, but with the high-def tech out there, the TV just can't keep up anymore. Sadly, I cut a deal with my wife. 25 more lbs lost and I can get a Plasma. So I can replace it with a shiny new TV but I have to work for it. Sigh...

You have the better excuse to upgrade immediately. Damn Hitachi was built too well!!

I would upgrade,Its hard to throw a bunch of money in old or aging technology.
