First time sub connection question

I've had my home theatre set up incorrectly for a while now and would like to set it up the correct way.

What type of cable do I need to connect my sub to my receiver? Should there only be one connection betweent the 2?
Lastly, how much should I expect to spend and what are some recommendations for brands?

I live in a small apartment if that makes a difference.

What receiver and what sub are you running?

Yes. A single connection with a standard audio interconnect cable with RCA plugs. Buy whichever one is long enough to connect the two. Brand is immaterial.
