I am a complete newbie to audio and i have no idea what i should get, i'm on a budget but i would really like some advice. I have found this package used for 375 dollars Canadian.

Energy c-200 speakers
Bose 301 series 3
Energy ESW-v8 subwoofer
Yamaha RX-v350

or i could substitute the c-200 for c-300 but it would be another 75$

is this a good deal for 375? is the other 75$ worth it

thanks in advance

MrKind,

That is a decent 'starter' package for the price. However, if I were in your shoes, I would keep the $375 and save up for a better setup. For instance, if you are going to listen to purely music the V350 is fine, but if you want to expand to bluray, the audio will not be supported. Also, I would try to get the same speakers in reference to surround audio for timbre matching, rather than mixing the bose with energy. But if you have to have it, go for it!

I'd see if you can get a price for just the Energy speakers and subwoofer (both the C-200s and C-300s). Are these all in mint condition? The Bose is definitely not interesting to me. If the receiver is in mint condition and has remote you might see if they'll do that same price for the Energy speakers and the receiver. If the value of the receiver exceeds $70 to the seller then I would pass on it.

If he is unwilling to break them up that way try to explain he will still have a receiver and a pair of well known speakers that he can still sell for a reasonable amount assuming they are in good condition. I could picture someone dropping $150-200 for the receiver and Bose speakers.

I agree with Seth. (who is our resident expert on the pre-owned market) The Energy's are nice speakers. I don't care for Bose...The receiver is an ok piece if it can be had cheap.

Judging by value alone, the deal sounds not that bad, however it may very possibly be a complete waste money for your specific situation and requirements.
Please provide more background info like size of space (including no walls access to attached room), your existing equipment and what are you trying to achieve.
What is indented use for this (5.1 ? ) system - music or movies? If both try to give percentage for both.

In any case - rushed decision - is a bad one. Take your time and learn and if you miss this deal - no biggie - you can always find better deals.

okay so im going to just be using it for music, no movies or anything like that, this set up is for my bedroom. It has a bit of a weird shape to it. it is shaped like an L with two entries. and my current set up is some Sony clock radio thing. If you need any more info just ask.

thanks again

Seth is our expert on used gear so I'll echo him and the others. Although if you're just playing music and no movies all you really need is two good speakers, a subwoofer, and a receiver.
