Hi there...I am in the process of building my first system. Between research and conversations with friends, I have come up with the beginings of what I may want. I do not have an outrageous budget, but am hoping to get something that I will enjoy for a good while, and grow in to. I would appreciate any feedback or advice, as I am new to this. OK, this is what i've come up with...Marantz PM8005 integrated amplifier, Oppo BDP 105D disc player, and the Rega RP3 ELYS2 turntable...I have just begun researching speakers.. So far I have come up with Polk Audio RTiA9, Paradigm Monitor 11v7, Aperion Audio Verus Forte tower speakers, or Golden Ear Triton 7 or 5 as options...Does this sound like it would all be compatible? Is there something else I should be looking at? I really can't go much above $5,000...My room is roughly 14x20, opens up on one side to a hallway and office area, and is carpeted. I listen to rock, blues, americana, alternative, etc. Thank you for your input!! matt

Are you looking for a 2-channel setup or are you planning to end up with a home theater? If stereo only, why are you considering the Darbee edition of the Oppo? I think you should put more into the speakers and less into the electronics. Philharmonic 3's or Salk Songtowers, a modest AVR that won't choke on the occasional 4-ohm dip (Marantz SR5008 or similar), and Panasonic disc player or Oppo 103 would get you a lovely sound.

Thank you for your response..I do not intend to have a full surround sound system. I have one entertainment area now, and it has a TV..I will listen to music in the same place..my thought is to have a system that does both fairly well. I want to improve my video and have great audio. My thoughts on the electronics is to start with something a little bigger that I may not necessarily 'need', but save myself from having to upgrade too soon. Not sure if this makes sense or not, or is unnecessary..thanks!

Matt, are you kidding, $5000 is an awesome budget for a music only system... I try to keep mine around $3000 each (check out link on bottom of post to see some of mine)....

If I were in the market to spend $5K on a music only system here is what it would be...

First turntable- $900 for a music hall Ikura, I like this table, wish it wasnt so expensive, but its such a nice looking table Musicdirect has one for $900 with a 2m blue cart. This is an impressive table, my brother has one..

Next Amp- I say Outlaw rr2150 $699 or B-stock $599

For the Cd player, if you are not playing sacd or Blu rays, I would not buy the oppo, its an awesome unit but why spend that much for a cd player, most I would go is $400 , the yammy n500 - again on sale at music direct, right now they are 50% off so $399 http://www.musicdirect.com/p-161290-yamaha-cd-n500-network-enabled-cd-player.aspx thats a dac and cd with streaming, nice unit, I have one on the way to me :)

OK, now for the fun part...

You have a good sized room, not sure of your ceiling height but I would be looking for bookshelves and subwoofers, the above electronics come to right under $2000, figure $2000 with cables... so that leaves $3000 for the heart of the system, I would honestly look into a $500 turn table, but the ikura is so sexy and I just like it for that price, you save $300, thats not too shabby...

For speakers I would grab a pair of Sierra 2's and a pair of sb-2000 sub woofers... that would keep you under $5K and be an awesome system, even if you get the gloss black ikura ($50 more for gloss from music direct), and the gloss sierras, and gloss sb2000's you are still at budget. I built a similar piano black system, pics are in my sig...

That would go together very well, the rr2150 allows you to integrate subs into a system very easily and it works well, I would switch it around 60 and play with it until its right. So what this will do is give you the entire 200+ watts of the amplifier for your mids and highs, letting the sub amps handle the hard to power lows with out taking away from where the voice...

NOW if you are not in the market for a 2.2 (which is my favorite type of music only system), you can get a real nice set of towers for the cost of the subs and books, I would look into the sierra towers, they are around $3000 with the tweeter upgrade and a nice finish, but I vote for the subs, you will NEVER regret it, especially with the genres you listed...

Anyway, good luck, let us know what you decide..

PS- the 2.2 is going to be nice for your tv, BUT you wont have to run it through the system, just make sure you have an output that will work for you in this system, which you should, optical, digital, or analog...
