Brand new to teh audioholics.com. Hello to the community.
First I am going to start with the type of system that i recently received. Handed to me by my uncle, pretty sure he doesnt know what he had, but got a brand new Theater Research TR-502 system. Well, just the speakers came in the box with no subwoofer or remote control that should be included.
I can't find the subwoofer anywhere, so is it possible for me to use just use the speakers with cables to a tv or dvd player. or do i need the specific brand subwoofer/receiver???

thank you for ur time

What are you intending to do with the speakers?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but those are "White Van Speakers". They are probably the worst thing that ever happened to audio. They have no design parameters other than to imitate the appearance of more expensive components. They use cheap drivers in potentially dangerous internal wiring configurations that could be damaging to other parts of a home audio system like an amplifier or receiver. They are made in China and shipped to the US and sold from the back of a van or SUV at large traffic areas in cities, like malls, shopping centers, gas stations, and banks. They give the potential unknowing person a story about how great the speakers are and how expensive they are supposed to be, but they have surplus amounts and need to sell them cheap ($200 area or so, but still a huge rip-off).

It is unfortunate that your uncle was "had" by these con-artists, but at least you didn't pay anything for them. If you would like help setting up a better system, that isn't potentially a hazard to your home (fires could possibly be started by these speakers if the components they are connected to aren't equipped to handle overloads) one of us can help you get a nice budget system setup that would be safe and sound reasonably better than the Theater Research stuff. Be very careful using them if you do use them, but I recommend you not waste your time or risk damage to your stuff using them.

Good luck.:)

Well said.

Free speakers are always nice - regardless of origin. Yes, you can use them without a subwoofer and then get a sub down the road (which will help considerably).
