It seems most of the DIY on here is for speakers. I want to do some speakers too one day, but the woodworking is a large hurdle for me. It's just so messy.

Anyway, I just pulled the trigger on the bottlehead "Quickie" Pre-amp with the constant current upgrade.
Quickie battery powered directly heated tube preamplifier kit

I'm intrigued by its simplistic design and its pure DC battery operation. It looks rather simple to build and seems to be a good first project. Also, you can't complain about the price.

Anybody else build one of these yet? Any comments or reviews? It is supported pretty well on the BH forums.

Wish me luck :D

Yup. I actually just looked at that one last night!

As far as amps, I think this might be my first one:

Probably not the best, but the price is right and there's the possibility to add to it or upgrade down the line.

I really like the what I see on the oddwatt stuff
OddWatt
but I think that will start with something cheaper until I have a bit more confidence.

I also have plans to build a SS amp, even etch my own boards etc, but that is probably a few years down the line.

I have a chemistry degree and work at a semiconductor manufacturing plant. But, at the end of August I'm starting back into a few electronics and circuits classes :D

I've been thinking of getting one of their headphone amps; they look like nice kits.
