New to all this, but here it goes. Looking for hardware that I can plug my Fire Stick in to and separate the audio before going to TV, with video pass through. Needs 2.1 output, bass, treble, volume controls. Take or leave a built in amp and or Bluetooth. This is for a small desktop system in my bedroom. Monitors will be 3.5 or 4 inch woofers with a 6 or 8 inch subwoofer, amped or passive, which I don't have yet. What do I need, preamp, DAC, small receiver? No P.C. involved. Please don't laugh, for around a $100, maybe a little more. Already bought a thing for $30 that didn't work.

Can you plug the fire stick into your tv and run audio output from the tv? Being specific about make/model of gear involved helps, too. Why do you particularly want to split audio vs video? What product did you try for $30? A used avr might be a good way to go....

The TV is an old Toshiba, model no. 40FT2U1, that I inherited. Picture great, sound not that bad. Has 2 down firing speakers. No earphone jack that I can find. Does have a RCA audio out. If I can get the RCA out to work, might just buy those amped Presonus baby monitors Sweetwater is selling for $99 and let it go at that. Just exploring my possibilities. Doesn't have to be great, just like Music videos on U Tube. I hate those Bluetooth speaker things and sound bars with no separation. Thanks for your time. Oh, I have an old 5.1 Sony receiver that might would work, that thing is just so big, but it would be free!!

If only there was a name for something with built in amplification, processing, video inputs, video outputs, audio outputs, and volume control....

There is! It is EXACTLY what an AV receiver is.

I know, that's not what you say you want, but that is 100% exactly what you described in your first post.

You don't want a big one, but you want the core functionality of what all AV receivers do. They take video, pass it through to an output, strip the audio off of it. A pre-pro will not have an amplifier in it, a typical receiver will.

I'm not sure what about your $30 purchase didn't work. I use HDMI audio extractors all the time with GREAT success. So, some details of what you plugged it into and where unhappy with may matter. The big thing about HDMI audio extractors is that they do not have a volume control built in. So, you would need a speaker set which had a volume control of some sort. HDMI audio extractors JUST take the audio off the HDMI only device.

None of which is much different than using the RCA outputs that are already built into the TV you own. Which is what they are there for, and what should actually be used.
EDIT: I looked at the manual for your TV and it doesn't look like there are RCA analog outputs on it for audio. There is only a digital audio on RCA (S/PDIF) connection on the back for digital audio. You still will need a pre-pro of some sort with volume, or a set of speakers with integrated remote volume control and a DAC to get stereo audio out of the system. I would use the receiver you have if you want to get decent audio.

Well, I'm all for free. Why not try connecting directly to the TV and using the TV's digital output to connect to the Sony receiver?
