I've only heard a little of each but want to buy a CD of each of these singers.
Your opinions please on a good/best CD of each of these artists....not necessarily newest, just a good CD title for each.

Thanks

I really enjoy a large amount of female musicians. I like Fiona Apple as well, though her recordings could use some touching up (victims of loudness war, some audible clipping on them:()

Lately I have been listening to Dido.:)

PS: You know there is a cat in your avatar, just thought you should know.;)

I love that song "Criminal" by Fiona. Her deep voice is really sexy, like Carley Simon singing "Your So Vain"

For Fiona, Tidal (her first) is the best, but all 3 albums are good.

Patricia - Companion is live and is excellent. My close second favorite is Cafe Blue.

I think Fiona Apple's second CD, "When the Pawn [yadda yadda]" is her most engaging and best album. It's much stronger musically and lyrically than Tidal.

Extraordinary Machine is very good as well, but I suggest you start with When the Pawn.

I didn't like Pawn as much musically as I did Tidal, but it is definitely a more mature album, especially lyrically, and Extraordinary Machine is an evolution, though again not a superior work musically IMO. Musically, Tidal is simple, and that works IMO. I have the leaked versions of that album and in most cases, the early versions were better than what made it to the album. The mastering and quality of the album is excellent; the DVD-A tracks, though stereo, are very good.

The title song from Extraordinary Machine is one of the most enjoyable things I have heard in years. If the whole CD was that good (alas, it is not even close) it would be a masterpiece.

Any of 3 or more

You can't go wrong with Patricia Barber on Modern Cool, Cafe Blue or Companion. It you really acquire a taste then Verse (her first without cover songs) or Nightclub (Patricia does the standards) may also satisfy.

Patricia Barber's "Mythologies" is very nice. When I first heard "Orpheus/ Sonnet" the whole house moved...some crazy bass and guitar playing.

"Cafe Blue" would be another great choice..."Nardis"...awesome.

I'd ditto the Patricia barber Modern Cool recommendation. Captivating cover of the Doors' Light My Fire.

It's a technically brilliant recording too. (Very "forward" sounding, I'll warn you.)
