I have purchased a used TX-SR602 without a remote. The one for the model, RC590M sells for $ 53 new, and I would prefer a cheaper, used remote. So can I use the receiver with a different remote? Or would a universal remote be adequate? Please help me with this, and as always thanks a ton for your time.

My suggestion would be to buy the original remote but you may find it cheaper, maybe at places like http://www.replacementremotes.com or EBay.

Onkyo is pretty consistent with their codes from year to year so an Onkyo remote from another model should work except of course that if it is older than the receiver it won't have buttons for new features on the 602 that didn't exist on the receiver the remote came with.

A cheap universal like the One-For-All 8811 (or 8810w - same thing, sold only at WalMart) has codes for Onkyo but like most inexpensive universals may not have all the codes for every feature of the receiver and/or may put those functions on buttons that you don't like.

A good universal remote costs a lot more than $53 so I'd get the original if possible. You'll need it to program the universal anyway.

go oem or you will always regret it, been there! 53 bucks aint bad actually. I paid $150 for an older yamaha remote once..lol

Just a thought - you could also consider buying another 602 (like this one on eBay for the next 2.5 hours). I don't know what the going rate is for one, but that one on eBay is $200, and maybe you could find one cheaper. My thinking is that if you're going to spend $50+ on a remote, then you could get a second receiver for about $150 more.
