Today marks the final launch for Space Shuttle Atlantis.

Atlantis is scheduled for retirement after this launch. This is only two more scheduled shuttle launch, STS-133 Discovery (Sept 2010) and STS134 Endeavour (Nov 2010).

Atlantis started out it's career on October 3, 1985 on a military mission launching communication satelites used to launch nuclear weapons against the Soviet Union. Now it will end it's career launching a Russian built piece for the International Space Station.

Irony...

Hopefully a new administration will see the value and importance of an aggressive space program. I've been so fortunate to see many shuttles launch being here in FL. There's nothing quite like it, espcially a night launch. Day or night, nearby or across the state, it's hard for me not to get all emotional. It really embodies what America is and hopefully continues to be... striving to be great, to be the best, to explore, challenge, and sacrifice.
