Final decision - Hsu VTF3 vs. Velodyne DLS5000

Just need some help with final decision.
Room is 20x22 and open to a bar area.
Mainly for home theater use. This is my first subwoofer, so I dont know if I would even notice small differences. Both units are big, about 80 lbs. The velo has a 15" driver? vs. 12" for the HSU but the HSU goes lower, like 18-20 vs 23. Cost is $200 more total for the HSU.
Is it worth $200 more? Would I even notice the difference as I am a novice. Thanks for all of your expert advice!

well, the velo goes lower then 23, its just getting down at that point. The Avtalk forums tested it outside and it has about 95dB at 23hz. But, the hsu will definatly go lower. The velo will go louder, it got to 115dB outside in the test. Either subwoofer will do, just depends whether or not you want to spend the extra for the 15. I would get the HSU, because I want extension :)

As I have no idea what 23 or even lower sounds like, its hard to determine if its worth $200 to get the Hsu with its slightly lower range. My wife also wont let me crank it up to max (new baby), so would I even be able to use the lower extension on the Hsu?

How Low can you go!!!!!!!!!!

:D DF,

Suffice it to say 23 is loowwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!

You will find things loose in your home you were not aware of before. It will give you that funny feeling in your ears, like being on a plane or diving to the bottom of the pool (just not the pain).

Having the baby in the house you will probably never really get to crank it all the way up, even without the baby you probably wouldn't, because you would be afraid of things coming off of the shelves or off of the walls anyway. At moderate listening levels you will very impressed with either one. I have the DLS-3750R in a condo in a room 14X23 and I have it at about 1/3 volume and it shakes this place. I am not making that up, sometimes I feel for the neighbors!!!! This sub is rated down to 28Hz and in this size room it is astonishing!!! I only have 8 foot ceilings so that adds to the dynamic.

You will be happy with either one, you can't go wrong. What a great time to live concerning all of our HT options huh????

ohhh the HSU is more. Well, that changes things, sorry

go velodyne then

I has a remote, front ported (if its going in cabnets and such) plus I like the sound of front ported subs, and damn sexy looking. Even though the velodyne is giant, its looks nice, making it acceptable for being in the open. It also has DSP presets (Movies, Rock/R&B, Classical/jazz, Games) for changing the digital EQ.

If you know this, then go ahead an listen to them. I have only heard the velodyne, but its you can get it cheaper then the HSU, grab it (it's 1100CAD up here)

Having had both Velo and HSU products, you can't go wrong with either one. If you’re like many of us here you will be changing out at some point anyway. The HSU will have turbo option coming out soon that can be added to the VTF series making it even more flexible/powerful. With the size of your room, I’d probably get the VTF-3 MkII but you will be happy either way.
