Fiber-optic cables - quality vs. price myths?!

As I'm about to get my new receiver (Pioneer Elite VSX-74TXVi :D ) I am beginning to wonder about cabling etc. Now the only negative about the receiver is that it only has 2 dig. coax. inputs, and 4 optical inputs. Thus I'll need to connect at least my CD player by optical connection.

So for those who know something about opt. cables, how much would you spend for an optical cable so that sound quality is not sacrificed? (also make recommendations)

For example, a dollar store has optical cables now for less than $10, but I'm sure in regular stores the prices are much higher (esp. for somthing like Monster which goes for $100-200 -> nuts!)... All I know about opt. cables is that you want to be careful with them, keep them smooth (no sharp bends) and take care of the connector ends.

Thanks!

For $10 it is worth a try. If you hear sound, uninterrupted by skips, or mutes, it is working just fine:D There is no other effect of a poor cable but sound loss due to not sending signals that can be decoded and corrected if needed.

It will probably work ok but I would feel a bit more comfortable with Radio Shack Gold or AR stuff from Best Buy or Circuit City.
