Feedback on my accoustical treatment Ideas

Hi everybody,

Im getting close to purchasing accoustical treatments for my HT, and I wanted to get feedback from those experienced in this arena. Im considering purchasing accoustical treatments from Auralex. As of right now, my room has no treatments other than drapes, furniture, carpet, etc..etc....

If anyone has alternative links offering comperable or better quality treatments for less money......... IM ALL EARS!!!! I have no interest in DIY treatments, and I'm only considering inexpensive quality premade stuff. While I want to treat my room sonically, I dont want to spend a fortune either!!!!

I'll start by posting my beautiful artwork depicting my humble HT layoutView attachment 2928

First of all, I was kicking around the idea of buying this 16-pack of 2"x2'x2' foam panels.
http://www.truesoundcontrol.com/products/SFLAT.html
My plan is as follows..........
1. Place 4 of them evenly spaced above my tall 65" RPTV horizontally on the front wall.
2. Place 2 together above the couch to catch that pesky reflection point.
3. Place 2 more spaced out along the same wall as the couch.
4. Place 2 on back wall over subwoofer.
5. Place 2 on short 5.5' sidewall near the Left surround.
6. Place 2 on the front portion of the 5.5' sidewall
7. Place 2 on the short 5.5' sidewall near my LF speaker

Next come bass traps(8pack)........
http://www.truesoundcontrol.com/products/LENRD8.html
I would mount these in corners up near the ceiling.

1. Place 1+1 vertically in each front corner on either side of TV(high up)
2. Place 1 vertically in corner over subwoofer
3. Place 2 horizontally along back face of ductwork as it meets with 90degree angle of ceiling facing primary seating(ductwork extends down 14" from ceiling)
4. Place 1 horozontally in left corner by windows.(windows too close to allow verticle placement)

That leaves me with two leftovers I was thinking about putting both of those with the 2 in the front corners so the traps in front would be double length. I'm also a little concerned that the front left corner isnt a 90degree corner because the bass trap wont fit snugly into the corner. Will it matter??

Total cost is $259+$299=$558

What do the experts think of my plan??
Will this make a big improvement in sound quality?
Does anyone have a better 'non-DIY' plan for less than $600?

Are the Auralex treatments a good value??

PS...I was also considering buying a 3-pack of these 2'x4' base trap panels.
http://www.truesoundcontrol.com/products/CT45.html
I would mount them diagionally in the corners front left/right of my TV, and one in the corner back by the sub.
From what I can tell by ratings, I get the impression that the foam traps will do a better job. I would not buy these 'in addition' to the foam traps..... It's an either or proposition.

There is nothing wrong with the Auralex product... But you may want to go with the 3 or 4 inch foam.. I think for bass trapping you would be better off going with a rigid fiberglass type panel.. Straddling corners of the room..

myfi,
Thanks for the response. I was starting to wonder if anyone would EVER respond....LOL

I was considering the 3"x2'x4' panels,
but I was wondering if three of those 2x4 panels would do a better job than 16 of the 2" squares.

I could also use 4" panels something like this, but I dont know if I like how they look.
http://www.truesoundcontrol.com/products/4SFM24.html
I can buy a 6-pack of these and stay in my desired budget. Plus, with 6 2x4 panels, it would probably be enough to reasonably treat the entire room.

At this point, I only want to spend around $600 on accoustical treatments, so with that budget in mind, what is the best way to spend my money to achieve the best results???

I liked the look of these 2x4 panel bass traps, but their ratings arent as good as the LENRD traps.
http://www.truesoundcontrol.com/products/CT45.html
How much importance should I put into the NCR rating???? These panels have a lower NRC rating compared to the LENRDS, but since they're much larger in size and cover a larger surface area....they'll probably absorb more bass??? Yes??

Also, If I buy the bass trap panels, I will only treat 3 corners.(two up front with TV, and one in back corner over sub)

Would I be better off with 3 panels, or 8 LENRDs???

That's pretty much where I'm sitting right now. Im mulling over treating less with the more expensive treatments, or more with the cheaper treatments.

Well heck our product of course.. Just kidding :D

If you are thinking of true bass traps, which I am not sure if they sell them then go with the panels.. The other panels you listed do not go that low at all.. Might be good for first reflections though..

Those panels look awesome(and effective too)!! I didnt notice your sig.....LOL

Thanks for the info!! Those 244s look great!

Thanks

That's what I love about these forums:D I googled the other link on my own not having a clue about what alternatives are available. It looks like those panels absorb broadly enough that I that I could treat my room with a series of panels and be done.

And you hang them like a picture in a corner on a wire?? Can you hang them horizontally because I have a bad first-reflection on the wall above my couch and it will have to hang sideways.

Buck,

> I was starting to wonder if anyone would EVER respond. <

Many of the experts here are in the biz, like me, so I usually make a point not to post when someone asks about a competing product. :D That said, and since Glenn already chimed in, I have to agree with Glenn that LENRDs may not be adequate if you're hoping for serious bass trapping.

I GREATLY appreciate suggestions:)

To be honest, I was looking for alternatives and suggestions. I'm dumb about this stuff and didnt know what was available. Because of that, I was praying someone would clue me in on a great product for HT uses. That's exactly why I asked for advice:) I was a little surprised that very few commented on my 'semi-lame' ideas. I felt like I was barking up the wrong tree and I appreciate that I 'subtly' was made aware of a better alternative. I was hoping that someone would chime in and say......"you can do better". Because I dont know crap, I was considering buying treatments that were unattractive, less effective, and MORE EXPENSIVE:mad:

Im glad that I was steered in a different direction......

I cant wait until those 8-244s arrive!!

Woooo!!!!!

I'll comment once those puppies are on the walls:cool:

Thanks!
