Feedback Issues in Recording...

Ok I have set up my Mixer/Mic to my Soundcard and am having trouble with feedback issues.

I have my Mixers Line In - Plugged into my Soundcards Line Out (simple enough) but the problem comes with where I plug my Mixers (Record/Line Out) socket...

Now I plugged it into my Soundcards Line In... only I get NO response... it's just dead. I can receive but not record, I went into the options to switch where the pc should be receiving the noise from and it just says:

MIDI Synth
What U Hear
S/PDIF-In
CD Digital
Analog Mix (Line/CD/Aux/TAD/PC)
Microphone
Wave

So I guess Analog has to be it?... only when it's switched on, I still get NO sound when plugged into my Line In.

The ONLY way I can get sound is plugging my Mixers Record/Line Out into my Soundcards 'Microphone' jack and then switching the Microphone option on. But then I get a constant feedback hum through all my recordings... sure it's not TOO loud but it's loud enough to have to filter out in my audio program, but filtering tends to ruin the quality of the recording by leaving a tinny sound on the vocals.

So can anybody lend a hand here? I have Gold Connectors and everything I brought is Low Self Noise, so really I should have no feedback. The only thing I can possibly think of is that when I have to plug into Line Out and Microphone, the two jacks have a thick bump to hold when pushing it in and these rubber bumps need forcing in to be next to each other, which may be causing them to not go in properly? But then if I could get my Soundcards Line In to work, I wouldn't have this problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is this for home recording? See this article I wrote for EQ magazine that explains how to connect a mixer and sound card for recording purposes:

That has nothing to do with your problem.

Thanks for the info, trouble is my mixer has a specific PC Recording set up in which you use certain phono jacks called 'Rec' and 'Line In' and plug directly to the Soundcards Line In and Line Out.

The big problem is like in your example in the Windows Mixer to set levels etc... I have no 'Line In' and I have every option turned on, so I have no idea how to activate the Line In option.

Ok I've included pictures of what my Mixer connects to the soundcard from... the two phono jacks.

And also some pictures of my Recording Control and Play Control...

The Windows mixer Play Control panel (not shown) adjusts the mix of sources that play through the Line Output jack of the sound card. The Record Control panel lets you select one input from which to record.
As you can see... my PLAY CONTROL has the Line-In function and my RECORDING CONTROL does not, shouldn't it be the other way around?

Before you ask, yes I have everything in my Recording Control switched on for me to tweak and there is no line in, all I have is the Analog, but like I said, I get no sound from it.

So if I'm making a simple mistake, feel free to let a newbi know, it'd be much appreciated. Thanks

I have the Audigy 2 ZS as well and it definitely has a line-in. Your picture is showing the Windows mixer applet. If you installed the Audigy drivers you should have the Audigy mixer applet. Check that you have the Audigy selected as the default recording and playback device in the Windows sound applet (in Control Panel). Still, you should be able to use the Options menu to show all the available controls - it could just be that you have chosen not to show the Line-In control in the Windows mixer.

As you can see on this screenie, I have the right applet loaded and here are all the recording options loaded... no Line In.

Everything is installed, I've even reinstalled the soundcard and had the same results.

Wow, no kidding. It looks like Analog Mix should work, but you'll need to mute ALL the other sources in the playback mixer to keep them from causing feedback or adding noise.

Try that and let us know what happens.

Ok, but in the Playback section there is one called Line-In (weird I know) should I mute that one also?

No, that's the one you want!

Or maybe you could just try it. :D

Ok I've given it a shot... I set the following:

Record From: Analog
Playback From: Wave

Result - No sound recording from the mic, but am able to listen to beats through my set up.

Record From: Analog
Playback From: Wave & Line In

Result - No sound recording from the mic, but am able to listen to beats through my set up.

Record From: Analog
Playback From: Line In

Result - No sound recording from the mic and no sound coming back to the headphones.

The only way I can get sound to record is via the Microphone option in the Control Panel, but then I get a strong feedback on vocals.

I'm just baffled why I have no actual Line In in the Record From section?

Hi DB,

I've had a few fights with soundcards over the years, and thought I'd take a look at the problem. Unfortunately, I'm as baffled as you are (and you're not the first: http://groups.google.co.uk/group/24hoursupport.helpdesk/browse_thread/thread/1e4e451ea655de79/5863dc5dba393631?lnk=st&q=no+line+in+on+volume+control&rnum=1&hl=en#5863dc5dba393631).

You mentioned you re-installed the drivers. Have you tried the following:

1) Uninstall/Remove the driver
2) Switch off, remove the soundcard and reboot
3) Switch off, replace the soundcard (perhaps in another slot) and reboot
4) Reinstall drivers

It's a stab in the dark, but I've had it work for hardware when a simple reinstallation didn't.
