Feedback!!! GAHH!!! Small Jam space

I'm no full fledged audiophile - far from. A huge kicker is finances not permitting me to to delve in and get audio drunk with the rest of ya.

So my lack of knowledge and seemingly futile attempts are killing my band so freaking much!

We have a small jam room, maybe 16 ft x 11 ft, low angled/slanted ceiling.

Drums not mic'd, 2 amplifiers, 1 Vocal mic, 1 center room mic to pick up a basic, garbage recording, just so we dont forget what riffs we put out. No REAL recording arrangement (yet).

If the mic we have deployed in the room that we have set up to pick up everything is moved anywhere from this one place and one angle in the room... FEEDBACK. We've tried replacing the mic with an SM58 too, and still no difference.

Now, to make matters worse... if I setup a pedal in front of me, and step on it... FEEDBACK, turn it off, little to none.

Its driving us insane and hamstringing our moving forward.

Would sound proofing the walls stop it? Is it a question of positioning of the amps? We've moved them all over the room! ...is it a bad PA system and not the mics causing it? Is that possible?

2 raised JBL speakers in the rear corners of the room, guitar amps just off center 4 feet in front of each speaker, the mic is in the middle rear of the room behind the amplifiers, pointed downward slightly toward the floor, drum kit with vocal mic opposite side of the room.

(tried replacing all quarter inch jacks, we use mostly all XLR)

If there is a god, he would be an audiophile that can save us.
