I am curious about these fans.
Does anyone know if they are thermostatically controlled? On-off? Variable speed?
Also, do they blow up into the unit, or pull air down out of the unit?

I have them on my AVR-X4400H. I don't think they've ever turned on for me yet. If and when they do, they will push the air upwards over the heat sinks and out through the top.

I personally don't like to have fans inside the case unless it's easy to remove the fans (like with PCs).

It seems like you would have to remove those heatsinks to remove those fans in that picture. Too much work for me. :D

I prefer to just add external fans.

What will the separates crowd say about these internal fans. :D

Fans are required to pass UL certification...
For the shown Denon model, the fans drop out the bottom just remove the bottom cover and they area user accessable....
Key point is the fans rarely turn ON unless the AVR has inadequate free-air clearance space of <4-5" for the L/R sides, top cover. Also is pushing the amplifiers hard driving a low sensitivity/low impedance loudspeaker...
If that happens the AVR's internal temperature can get as high as 75 degrees C, it needs to cool down to maintain reliability.. By chance they do turn ON, most likely the volume level is so high that fan noise would be inaudible.

Just my $0.02... ;)

And I don't think the fans in my Crown XLS 2002 Series 2 amp have turned on yet.
