external dacs?

How are they used as far as connections.I understand it would be between my cd player and receiver,but thats it.Does the cd player connect to the dac via dig or analog then the dac to cd input of receiver?Sorry for the ignorance but never looked into dacs before,it was recommended over a new dedicated cd player.thanks

I hate to always sound like the naysayer but the only reason to choose an external anything is if it does a better job than your internal whatever.

While there are certainly differences between dacs, once you get to a certain point the differences are so vanishingly small that you won't really be able to notice any improvement.

As far as the connection goes, since it is a Digital to Analog converter you'd make a digital connection from the CD player to the external DAC.

Since the DAC converts Digital to Analog, you can't feed it analog signals obviously. Coax or TOSLink from the CD Player goes to the DAC. RCA or Balanced cables carry the analog signal to the amplifier. As has been said, you won't be able to notice a difference. It would not be an effective use of your money to DAC a signal and then run it into a receiver.
