Extending an IR remote sensor

Noob to the forum here.

I am setting up my PC in my office to act as my DVR for the living room which is ~35ft away. I have already ran my s-video + RCA's and they are working great.

Now I want to be able to use the remote for the PC in the living room. I am aware that there are IR to RF extenders/repeaters but I am on a budget for this project and would like to just extend the remote eye 35' to the living room. I am going to do this via a 3.5mm (3 conductor) M/F extension.

My question is will this work on such a long run (35') or will there be too much signal loss? I know that I can add an amp inline but that will put me over budget. Help is appreciated.

Should work. An IR emitter with a 50' extension cable can be had for under $10. You might want to pick one of those up and give it a try.

The extension should work. What I used was alarm wire from radio shack and 2 3.5mm male ends. Took a little soldering but it was easyer to make then you can imagine. Final cost was like 5 bucks for the cables. I feel I should stress how easy these are to make, I am a soldering amerature. This was my first succesfull soldering project. :)
