Ok, Say I'm buying separates a 5 channel amplifier and a processor

where does the sub plugs into??

do I need another amp for the sub?

or should it be a better idea to buy a receiver + the 5 channel amp so I can connect the sub to the receiver ad the rest of the speakers to the amp?

Hey don't laugh!!!

The majority of subs are self-powered so all you need to do is get it a line-level signal and it will amplify it itself - therefore you plug it into the pre-pro or receiver which will likely have a dedicated subwoofer pre-out.

The choice between a reciever and pre-pro amounts to personal preference really but consider that receivers support the latest formats and a whole bunch of convenience features at a lower cost than a separate pre-pro. A receiver with amp pre-outs (so you can use the external amp) is often a better approach than a dedicated pre-pro.

Yes, the processor will come with a subwoofer preoutput just like a receiver.:)

Not to belittle you or anything, but the very fact that you're asking these kind of questions tells me that you should be looking for the easiest solution, which would be a receiver.

Since he is here asking the right questions & educating himself he will be able to make an informed decision in either direction.:)

FguerraG, both receivers & prepros have a separate input for a sub. So all you will need is an IC from one to the other.

Lots of people including myself, use a receiver with a separate amplifier. It all depends on what you want. Most prepros don't have the latest & greatest bells & whistles & update more slowly. They also cost more. But generally thoght to have superior sound.

A lot of companies upgrade thier receivers every year, so no sooner do you buy it, it is almost obsolete. They have the latest & greatest, but generally fall short in power.

So just figure out what you want & go & audition to find the one that sounds the best to you.

Not to belittle you or anything, but the very fact that you're asking these kind of questions tells me that you should be looking for the easiest solution, which would be a receiver.
