I am a poor university student who would like to save some money on a receiver to go with my paradigm monitors. I found etronics.com where i can get the denon avr985(2805) for $712, while for me to buy it in canada, it would cost me over $1300. I was just wondering if I can trust this site, or should i avoid it? is the phillips warranty they provide any good?
Thanks for the advice everyone
Derek

I've used them twice. Great prices and always got what I had ordered. Don't remember if the mfg warranties are voided tho. :)

I don't know about Denon but they aren't an authorized Yamaha dealer so the Yamaha warranty is no good. Fortunately they have a 30 day return policy, I had a receiver die on me after 3 days use and they replaced it. I ended up upgrading while I was at it. I'd buy from them again due to their low prices - probably will get a HDTV from them with tax return.

I have made several camera item purchases from etronics before, they all went through without any problems.

Perhaps a smarter purchase would be the $699 Denon 3805 refurb with a 90 day Mfr warranty from Ecost/Pcmall/Macmall

Is that 90 day warranty at e-cost good if you live in canada?

It is a Denon warranty, so you should be able to bring it to any Denon service center as you would if a brand new unit needed repair

I actually just purchased my Pioneer 1014 from etronics and had it delivered to Ontario. I ordered it the night of Thursday, Nov 18th and paid for the 2 nd level of shipping so not the cheapest one but then not the most expensive either, I think it was 4-7 day (not including order processing time) and I got the reciever on Friday, Dec 3rd. So it took a little longer then expected but so far so good! They shipped it through DHL in the U.S. and they give you a tracking number that gets it to the border and then it is handed off to Canada Post (Borderfree) who then give you a new tracking number for their system.

As far as warranty goes the guys from etronics said they would cover the warranty but I would have to pay for shipping to and from etronics in case of a problem ( I saved that email just to cover my butt!)

Scott, I've also been thinking about getting a reciever (yamaha) from the states, either by mail, or by driving to get one. It's way cheaper and worth the 2 hour drive, to save $400! But I've been worried about customs and duty charges (although I can't imagine they'd be even close to $400!). I've never really ordered from the US before, how much did you have to pay for duty and taxes etc?

I purchased an expensive digital camera from them at a very good price. It arrived promptly in manufacturer's sealed box. No problem. I would buy from them again should the situation arise.

Just a quick note:

I am investigating a receiver purchase and have looked into etronics shipping to Canada. They have teamed-up with Canada Post to provide a seamless shipping solution, with the shipping price all incompasing of taxes and duties etc. Items appear to be less likely to be held up at customs. The only downfall is that you pay GST and PST at the time of order, where in many cases it never is collected if shipped USPS.

Duty on recievers is 6% of the purchase cost and then you have to add 15% tax, so just take whatever the cost is in the U.S. Change it to C$ and then add the 6% for your sub-total and then add the 15% to that for your Total. BUT if you went with etronics.com for eg. A reciever that is $398.88 US is $491.82 is Canadian funds, then you add $66.23 for standard shipping to Southern Ontario, then add $29.51 for duty, then add the $88.13 for tax and you have a $675.69 total to your door in Canadian funds.

Does this also apply to the HTR series? I thought the HTR series could be purchased just about anywhere and the warranty would be valid and it was just the RXV series that had to be from those special stores.

Am I wrong, please let me know as I was about to purchase the HTR-5760 from them. Also if Etronics.com is not a valid e-tailer, what about bhphotovideo.com are they a valid e-tailer where the warrently will be valid?

I am in Kingston, Ont and I also use it twice, in august I purchase 2 paires of JBL E10 they took 3 week to come but no problem, but the secound time was this last 23 Oct, I order a JBL sub....and I'm still waiting; I contact them 2 week ago and even if the web page said the sub was "usally shippe in 24hrs" they was out of it but expect to get some in the next 5 days.....that was 11 days ago. I will wait ontill Friday if I don't get the sub I will probably cancel the order. So for me so far it a 50\50 rates. :(
