I digitize my 78s and LPs records to computer and then to CDs. This gives me a chance to see what kind of sound is there and do a little cleanup. After all even brand new LPs have little tiny pops.
My complaint is with sound equalization.
I realize that most newer LPs follow the RIAA standard pretty well but this seems not always true for the older LPs. When I look at the waveform and listen to some Jazz, Bing Crosby or even Elvis LPs it seems that the original tapes were simply transferred to an LP recording medium without much consideration of what adjustments were needed to bring that base up or restore a decent “headroom.” By headroom I mean the delicate range of frequencies from 8000 to 14000 cps that give the sound crispness and eliminates that horrible muddiness.
I usually wind up winging it on these records. I use information on the “proper” equalization only as a general guide.
