EQ-MAX 12, SMS-1, Denon 3310 - Questions!

Hi all,

Hopefully I'm not posting something already posted, I've searched like crazy and gone back to 2009 in the forum. If there is a thread that has already answered these questions, please feel free to point me there.

I have just ordered 2 EQ-MAX 12's and an SMS-1. This combo will replace 2x Mirage S10 subs that I just cannot get happy with. I've tried all placements, configured for what feels like forever, just can't get the bass tight. The room is definitely a challenge, square with a hallway 1/3 from front on left, with stairs from the main floor...so not uniform and no option to place the subs on opposite walls. Currently they are at the front, inside the mains (Focal). It is a basement theatre, soundproofing panels on 3 walls. Floor is concrete, underlay, carpet, walls are sheetrock, wood studs, concrete. No choice in the wall construction, it was already done.

Equipment list:

Denon 3310 (Audyssey MultEQ)
Focal L/R + Main
Boston Acoustic Surround L/R and SB L/R
(not yet installed) Velodyne EQ-Max 12 x 2
(not yet installed) Velodyne SMS-1

I hope that's somewhat clear :roll eyes:

Now the questions:

* Run the SMS-1 EQ and get the curve as flat as possible first, then run Audyssey? Or Audyssey first then adjust programming through SMS-1?

* Run the subs where they are, or one front and one side? I know this is likely very room dependant, but I'm wondering if running one on the side and one at the front is a no-no for some reason? I understand this might be difficult to answer.

* Crossover...the Focal's are good to 50Hz, and I would usually cross over at 100 or 120 in the Denon, any opinions here? I know that crossing over at 80 is common, but it seems that the sub should/could be handling the frequencies better from 100-120 and below? Advantages or disadvantages to crossing over higher than 80?

I'm not a beginner, but nowhere near an expert, and just looking for some opinions. If the opinions differ, great! I'll take the best of all the advice and hopefully arrive at a setup that works best for me.

MUCH thanks all!

Mike

Try and post this at AVS forums in the velodyne sub thread. The guys at velodyne respond pretty fast.

Or call or email velodyne directly.
