Assuming the Epson PowerLite 8000i projector is in great shape with a new lamp installed, would $700.00 to purchase this be a mistake for watching DVD movies.

I don't have more than $1,000.00 to spend.

Is there a big difference from contrast ration 400:1 or 200:1 ?

Yes - I would consider it a mistake when the Optoma H31 and the InFocus SP4805 are both available and are designed to be true home theater projectors.

What the specs completely fail to show:
Noise level
Scaling capability
Image processing quality
Motion Handling
Color quality
Inter-pixel gap (screen door effect)

What it does show is that it is way to bright for a theater black environment and the contrast is a joke compared to even the cheapest home theater projectors.

What is also not listed is HDMI/DVI w/HDCP, which means that if the broadcast flag is raised, or if you get a HD disc player (next year) you will not be able to watch HDTV on that projector unless it is delivered over component video.

This is a projector 4 years OUT of production, with an original design from 1999. The development of projection technology has been through the roof since then.

What also is not known is whether the polarizers or LCD panels have been serviced and properly maintained. Dust? It's a BIG if and is not even a projector that I would consider as comparable to the SP4805 or H31.

This includes info on audible noise at 42db:
http://www.projectorcentral.com/Epson-PowerLite_8000i.htm

By comparison, the Optoma H31 lists audible noise at 32db - about 25% quieter, but likely can be made even more quiet in 'low power' mode.

Just my 2 cents - but I would look elsewhere as for $1K you can get a brand new projector WITH a warranty, and 100% new everything.
