Epson 8700UB 12V Trigger?

This Epson is at the top of my list, as my budget just got dropped out of the JVC DLA-HD250 class and i'll be buying soon.
For those of you with this projector could you please clarify the triggers operation. I have wired my theater expecting to turn the projector on with a trigger, but i'm reading Epson data calling this port a "trigger output".
So perhaps it can be configured either way ?

I've NEVER heard of a projector which powers on from the 12v trigger. That is almost exclusively used as a way to drop a motorized screen. It applies 12v when the projector is on, and the screen drops.

The issue with using a 12v connection to power on/off the projector is that it would be way to easy to drop power from time to time which would cause the projector to power cycle the lamp - which is devestating to do to projection lamps.

So, you go to a universal remote via IR or some sort of control system with RS232 control of it.

Well i guess its obvious this will be my first projector now isn't it !!

I'm going to have to rethink this now. I was going to macro sequence several pieces to turn on with a touch of my remote and thought i would split the trigger out from my processor that is turning on one of my amps, and run it to the projector.
I do have a Xantech IR repeater system but it only has 5 emitters that you stick on the eye of the intended product. I suppose i could use one of them, or get an extra emitter !

I've never used an RS232 for anything, and i'm not familiar with its operation.

Hmmm !!!!!!! Back to the drawing board.

Is the projector not in the same room as the remote you will be using? Why do you need an IR repeater system to turn the projector on? Just add the IR command to the remote (Harmony, URC, etc.) and have it run the power on command when you use your remote.

The projector will be on the ceiling and 6' behind me. I have yet to install it there and of course I sure hope the IR eye on the Epson is sensitive enough to receive commands from a forward facing remote.
My intent was to somewhat permanently mount my rather large Sony remote to a small stand bracket attached to a side table and fire it at a IR receiver transmitter.
My feeling is that its kinda tacky holding a remote over my head to shoot the projector, and therefore wanted a better way.
I wonder if there exists an IR reflector that i could mount high on the front wall that would just reflect the signal like a mirror ?

If you've already run a cable for a trigger why not just convert it to a flasher and place it on the rear IR window of the projector?

You may have to modify the other end as well depending on the input size of the Xantech.

If you have already used the 5 outputs on the Xantech just go out an buy the dual head emitters and you can double all the other outputs.

yes ADK, thats exactly where i was going with my thoughts. The trigger wire is a mono 3.5mm, and the xantech is 3 wire, but i'd only need to change out the plug in my wall. cat5e can be used for xantech runs also. This is how I'll probably do it.
The Epson came yesterday and i hooked it up real quick on a tabletop to watch a movie last night. As I suspected, both the IR eyes need a direct line of sight to the remote, so i would have to shoot over my shoulder.

Velly Interesting - when i moved the PJ to the very back wall where it will be mounted, it received the remotes IR signal when shot at the screen, but when i had it in the center of the room, it would not !
Something up front must be reflecting it, yes?

Hmmmm

Screens usually do a good job reflecting IR back at a projector and produce very good reliability. All projectors and remotes vary as to their sensitivity, and some projectors have front, top, and rear IR receivers. So, if you move it back, it may expose the front IR emitter more and put it more in a 'sweet' spot for control.

I control my projector via RS-232, so I don't have these issues. ;)
