I have an entertainment unit that hold a 32" TV. Now a 32" LCD. The left side can hold VCR, DVD, Receicer etc. It has a glass door. The back has a thick cardboad with cutouts you can push-out for the wires and cables to go through. Isn't it better to leave the back off so there is better air circulation? The cutouts are usually to small for all the wires anyway.

ant' the wires that should be worred about. ;)

yes leaving the back off would be better, having componits like a reciever in a confined space can lead it to over heat, which will shorten its life span or, make it fail completely.
or, you could cut a larger hole in the back to leave some structural stablity to the entertainment unit. or, you could leave the glass door open when you run the equpment.

I've removed that 1/16" cardboard backing from every wall unit I've ever owned precisely to improve air flow to the components.

It doesn't look as pretty because you can see the wires when viewed from the front unless you can tie them neatly to the sides but better safe than sorry. Too much heat can lessen the life span of your components.
