EMP Sub, 24 hour power or not to 24 hour power?

I just set up my emp sub away from my theater system. It is plugged into a constant feed power supply. Do I need to turn the power off to this sub when not in use or can the power remain on 24/7?

Anyone familiar with these?

If it is going to be sitting for weeks on end unused, I would say turn the power off. If you use it on a regular basis, there is no need to disconnect power from it any more than any other piece of gear.

I personally like to power everything down when not in use ... TVs, DVD players, receivers, etc. I'd consider doing the same with a sub or anything else ...

Does this amp not have an auto-off capability (aka "sleep" mode)? Any gear that does not get used regularly, I disconnect. I don't like to have to reconfigure everything on my receiver or TV, so those are always connected.

EMP subwoofer power down answer...

I spoke with Gary from EMP. For anyone using the sub, E-10s there is a built in sensor. After 15 minutes without any signal the unit powers down and goes into sleep mode. There is no need to power this down.

Just incase anyone else stumbles upon the same question or second guesses their purchase because of no auto off/on feature.

RE: Auto Off

Most "Auto Off" devices in amps simply cut signal but not power to the power supply. Check out my Axiom EP500 review for further explaination.

Editorial Note on Auto Off (update 07/14/05)
In our investigative studies we actually discovered that there really isn't a true auto off on any powered subwoofer which doesn't have an independent DC trigger line. In reality most subs simply remove the connection between the power output devices and the subwoofer driver during the auto off state. But the power transformer and associated amplifier electronics are still active.

Power down continued... for Gene

;)Thanks for the feedback Gene. I am guessing you saw my thread above your most recent. When I was speaking to Gary at EMP I told him what my concern was in regards to not being able to plug this into the recievers power supply and in turn I would have to shut this off manually on a daily basis when not in use. I also informed him that I spoke with one of his techs earlier who mistook my sub for a RBH sub. The RBH subs have a three way power switch I guess with an auto off feature built in. What Gary told me on the E-10s is that this feature is actually built into the power pack itself. He told me ( maybe not word for word ) that after fifteen minutes, if no signal is detected the E-10 powers down and acts only on a very small voltage, enough to detect a signal. I could have misunderstood him, or he might have misunderstood me, but from the sounds of it this is not like the axiom auto switch that you mentioned. I will keep looking into it though. It did strike me as odd though not to mention that as one of the features in the brochure or online. If I knew then what I know now it would definitely be something I would look for. Maybe you could follow up with him about it... It might be worth a new thread to your recent ECA 4/44-sub package review;)

I just read your quote after sqawking all that off in a novella I will call Nubie reinvented... Anywho, I do not quite know what any of that means, however I am assuming it means that there is no power moving from the transformer or power pack through the rest of the sub. If there is no power being sent through the sub though, doesnt that mean that there is no power being consumed and no energy (heat) being generated through the trasnformer or otherwise? I guess in short what I am asking is this, does this mean there is still ample opportunity for this subs transformer or amp electrics to overheat or suffer from premature death by tazer?

what do I know...

I can not even seem to work these threads right! Maybe I am not worthy of a multi-hundred dollar home theater system:rolleyes:

What they should have also said is you should NEVER plug a sub of any kind into your receiver, period. The outlets on a receiver are not designed to handle a high current device.

Auto-off isn't totally off but will draw a very small amount of power. Like j_garcia said, if you were to leave for a long period of time, turn it completely off; otherwise, auto-off is fine.

Never, ever plug a sub or TV into the receiver's switched outlets. Those outlets are fine for things like a DVD player but not for a high current device like a sub or TV, unless you are fine with the potential for setting your house on fire. ;)

Thanks J garcia. I am actually waiting for my APC C-5 to show up at my house today to plug everything but my sub into...
