EMP Impression Speakers: wow!

This has been a long time coming, but I've finally made it to the end, or should I said beginning, of my home audio/video journey. I've been researching home theater stuff for about 2 months now, and through muuuuch help on this website, was able to piece together a system that would work for me both budget wise, and quality wise.

I had decided on the EMP Impression 5.0 set in black, with the Pioneer Elite 21txh as my receiver. Well, I've had the receiver for a couple weeks and the speakers finally came Tuesday (holy cow boxes). Thank goodness for the girlfriend working near by, she somehow managed to get them inside for me! So, I've been studying for a final all week and told myself I wouldn't touch the boxes until after I finished (last night). Although I did sneak a peak Tuesday night, I finally set up the towers and center channel last night.

Note, I didn't perform any calibration yet, and I'm still trying to figure out all the preset audio adjustments; I'll get to that this weekend.

Anyhow, initial impressions: wow!!! I couldn't believe the sound coming out of these things. I will describe these speakers from a non-professional perspective, and while I was watching the Dark Knight. Midbass was tight, highs were crisp. I had my receiver up to -10db and I was amazed at the clarity. What really did it for me was the ability for the speakers to be so powerful during intense action sequences, and then get so quiet next, but they're not quiet, everything's just detailed. It's tough to describe, but there's no hiss or anything when it's quiet. These are niiice speakers!

What was really cool too was how during the quiet scenes, when dialogue was taking place you could still hear the orchestra on the soundtrack, and they almost sounded separated from the movie, like as though they were actually there playing while people were talking. Sorry if this all sounds common for nice 5.0 (or 3.0 at the moment) systems, but I'm just very impressed. I've never had a surround sound setup, so when I bought my house it was my goal to set up something really nice for my girlfriend and I, plus friends/family. It really feels like a movie theater, but with sound more "in my face" and like I'm in the best seat (plus no annoying other people around me).

I really don't know what else to say, I'm just extremely happy with my purchase. With the prices I was able to get everything, just over a thousand we'll say, I couldn't imagine anything else. Ok ok, subwoofer is next, there definitely isn't that rumble during explosions that I would like to hear with only the speakers. But, don't get me wrong, everything sounds awesome! I would high recommend these speakers to anyone. Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have about them. Check out the pics too...

Nice setup, and very clean install job! My wife would give you a big thumbs up on that!

Until you get a sub, make sure you set the front speakers to "large" and sub to "off" on your receiver.

I highly recommend getting two subs when you are ready as it will increase the dynamic range of your system and also ensure good bass for every listening seat. They don't have to be huge subs if you opt for two.

Congrats and welcome to the multi channel experience!

Haha thanks! My girlfriend keeps a verryy clean house, so the only stipulation for the setup was that I kept it clean too.

And thanks for the advice on the receiver set up. I'll definitely look into that tonight.

I was either thinking one 12 or yeah 2 smaller subs... I think I'm going to be using this more for HT, so I'd like the system to be able to really have that "oompf" on the lower end.

The advantages of two subs are much greater when your room is larger. It's hard to tell in that picture, but I don't think your room is really that large to warrant two subs right off the bat, unless you are a bass junkie (I am a bass junkie, and I have three powerful subs in a room smaller than that!). If I were you, I would get one good 12" for now, and if you wanted more you could get another one later. Something from Outlaw Audio, Hsu Research, SVSound, or Elemental Designs. Any of the 12's from those companies will go a lot deeper and louder than anywhere else at that respective price point.

The room itself is 20x13 with 8 inch ceiling, but it connects to the dining room which then goes into the kitchen. I really am leaning towards 1 12 because I was amaaazed at how good everything sounds as is, there's just no rumble! Sooo, since I'm not too picky, I think a 12 will be great. eD's A3-300 has sparked my interest, so I may go with that...

The A3-300 is a very good sub, I have one myself. At its price point, I doubt any other sub will have as much output.

Actually the benefits of modal averaging by using two or more subs are more profound in smaller rooms than larger ones. I can't think of any home theater room application where two subs aren't better than one regardless of room size.

Cripe, I wish I could say that. Between her 5 cats, and her family coming over every other week our house is in constant disarray. O yea, and the fact she's a slob, that too.

Here are 2 more pictures; I finally got the surrounds installed. They're a little higher than they should be, but I think it sounds fine. Running the wire through the wall wasn't too bad, we just then went through the floor in the basement and ran the wire to the corner where the receiver is. The sound is a lot more "fuller" now with the surrounds... good stuff tho!

Hehe thanks! I'll take that as a pretty high compliment..

Honestly, if I could be doing anything in the world it would be something related to this kind of stuff. I don't know what I'm going to do now that it's all setup; that was actually half the fun :)

Very nice setup! You did an excellent job, I would have to agree with Gene that if at all possible go with 2 subs. Its always better to have more than you need when it comes to subwoofer headroom especially with the new HD audio codecs that have enormous peaks in bitrate. This translates into much greater dynamic range that your speakers have to reproduce. I have no idea what you budget is, but I'm sure when the time comes you will have no shortage of suggestions here as always.

Need a bigger TV to match those big *** speakers imo. Just tell your wife Shock said it was okay.

Wow, very nice and neat looking! Hey, how about a close-up of your Pioneer Elite receiver. Better yet, can you take a few more showing off the finish of your EMP speakers? Thanks for doing what you have done already. ;):p;) Bet it sounds as good as it looks.........hehe. Congrats to you sir!!!!! :):)

I do agree that a 52" would round out the room a little better. But, the funny thing is, now that I have huge sound, I really don't think about a bigger display anymore... Although, if I ever did get a 52, the 46 would be pretty nice in the bedroom ;)

Sure no problem. Sorry 'bout the dark pics, I only have the camera on my phone so it's the best I can do. I don't believe the veneer on the speakers is of real wood, it's just sort of like a textured pattern, but the speakers themselves all have a clear gloss polyurathane coating on them. Either way, they're very sharp. Plus, yes they do sound amazing, especially with the Pioneer receiver.
