I am think of adding a seperate amp to my onkyo 875. Do you guys think the emotiva will add to the sound quality.

Not unless the 875 is having problems powering your speakers, the 875 is thx ultra 2 certified, so it should be plenty powerful, and an external amp shouldn't change the sound quality.

Thanks for your input. Yes the 875 already sounds good. I was just wondering if the greater power of the emo would make it sound better at mid to high vol.

If you are running out of juice then it will.

Bottom line is you are an audioholic and that requires an external amp that weighs over 100lbs so get it....

Yeah, I agree. I don't think you will ever need all that power. But what speakers are you using? Are they 8 ohms, 4 ohms, 2 ohms, etc.?

The important thing is that your amp needs to be able to handle the minimum impedance of your speakers.

And how hot does your Onkyo get?

I wonder if using an external amp would be beneficial in the long-run if it could keep the Onkyo from "burning up"?

I know some people use external fans to cool the onkyo. But I wonder if the damage is already done at the point of heat dissapation??

You gotta think that the heat INSIDE the amp is hotter than the heat on the surface.

I don't think the heat issue has much to do with the amps. It seems to be the REON that gets so hot. I have the prepro and it gets very warm where the video processor is located.

I would have never guessed that a video chip could cause such heat. But maybe you're right.

Video chips can get quite hot, look at the xbox 360, the heat from the GPU is one of the main reasons why there have been so many RROD issues, that and the CPU. But as you can see by the article that was posted on audioholics earlier today, the 360 will soon be getting a cooler running 65 nm GPU. Plus, not sure if you ever mess with computers much, but if you look at some of the nicer video cards, they have either large heat sinks, fans, or both.

I think video processors are a moot point in the high-def age of blu-ray and HD-DVD. What are we upscaling ?

Most displays can handle 1080i cable or sat broadcast to 1080p with no problem.

DCDi, Reon, HQV, VRS, VXP, and Marvel are all fine but at this point it wont be a factor for me when shopping for a new receiver. I no longer buy SD-DVD's and if i do occasionally watch on, any of the above chips will do a fine job. Its not like the above chips can turn copper into gold. In fact, SD-DVD looks better in 480p than 1080p with displays that can show native 480p. Unforntunately all current digital HDTV's can not display native 480p

Down the road i might get an Oppo 983 player, not unless blu-ray players improve with upconversion, then i wont need an Oppo 983.

Most professional reviewers have stated that upcoversion in the player has always been better than processing in the receiver (excluding high end pre-pro's like anthem)
