Emotiva Amp with Denon as Pre-pro

Hi,

I can't find the information now, but I remember reading something about Denon receivers as pre-pro's not playing well with Emotiva amps. Something to do with the input levels on the amp? I can't remember.

But I would appreciate some information from someone who has been there/done that since on paper at least, this looks like a killer combination for quality and value. Thanks for any help.

Hey Blue Dude,
I haven't found anything about them not playing nice together, but I think I know a couple users here who have tried a Denon prepro and Emotiva amp combo. I'll PM you their usernames, so you can contact them and ask them about it in case they don't see this thread.

Emotiva Amps

Just for refrence, while the LMC-1 pre-pro was in development, the beta test group on AV123 and other early purchasers of the combo used a Denon (2805?) receiver as a pre for the LPA-1 amp.

Denon as a pre w/ LPA-1

I use a LPA-1 amp w/ a Denon 3806 as a pre and I have no problems.

Any word back on this? I'm interested in using my Denon 3803 with an Emotiva amp as well.

I'm interested in knowing what you found out if anything.
Thanks.

I did some more searching and there were reports that there's a combination of Denon receivers, MPS-1 amps and low impedance speakers that could cause the amp to shutdown before appearing to develop rated power. I think that is why I got info stuck in my head that they didn't play well together. It seems that the nominal output voltage of the Denon preouts is something like 1.2V, which is a little lower than average. Throw in some possible clipping when cranking up the volume and the protect circuit on the amp kicks in when combined with a high current load.

But, the amp itself was doing its job and protecting the speakers - and it only happened when trying to generate absolutely insane SPL's . Also, the IPS and LPA amps don't have the same circuit and wouldn't be affected. (Of course, the speakers might melt their coils but at least you wouldn't be inconvenienced by a "premature" shutdown). Based on what I found, the Denons would be terrific pre-pros for anybody who wasn't courting early hearing loss.

Sorry for the scare everyone.

Strange, I never encountered this previously using a Denon 3803 and an Outlaw 755... -TD
