Embedded Technologies the Future of Home Theater Automation?

As companies continue to bring traditionally computer-based technologies such as digital video recording, MP3 file playback, video gaming and such to the living room, we are faced with the task of finding an easier way to allow non tech-savvy people to enjoy these activities. One solution that Universal Electronics is attempting involves integrate control software (called "Nevo") in various devices we already use - such as displays and handheld devices, thus allowing them to communicate with our networked home components. Based on the Universal Plug-n-Play (UPnP) standard, this allows Nevo to wirelessly play and control digital media on PCs connected to your network, transfer digital media from PCs to your Nevo-enabled device (currently HP and Viewsonic have products that are compatible) and even find and catalog all your digital media. For the future to include a PC in every living room, equipment is going to have to get a lot smarter in terms of how it communicates and interacts with other devices. This is certainly a step in the right direction.
