i kinda made an order for either:
a dual driver enclosure
or
two single driver enclosures

sealed and passive. :)

Some of those videos are of the prototype. I got to see it when I toured the factory - that thing looks like a monster and weighs in at nearly 70lbs  (sure surprised the hell out of me when I picked it up).

The only picture I was allowed to take while the unit was in development:

When I was talking to Ben about the driver he told me they tried to fry its voice coil using an EP2500 and they ended up over heating the amp 4 times before they just gave up.

I really hope some credible 3rd party measurements are taken soon.

You can see the surround deformation when it's hitting it's Xmax (or Xsus).

i asked eD that. they said that was the prototype, they said that the new surround material wouldn't do that.

"I'll believe it when I see it".

I hope you'd entered the contest to win a free one (or two). Tuesday (2/11) was the last day they supposedly received entries and they're announcing the winner on Thursday.

Not that I need another sub, but... :D -TD

well, since eD is so backed up. I figured I'd order a 13av.2 driver so I can build my own sealed box.

it should ship monday. but plus 30 days shipping to me :)

That looks like an impressive sub. I would like to see the dumax numbers on it. The power handling sounds impressive, but how is it at turning input power into acoustical output?

Don't forget, the JL audio 13W7 will do 32mm xmax, one way linear, dumax verified, and requires 3000 watts rms to reach 10% thd. Not Bad for a woofer that was released in 2001 :D:eek: It also remains usable to about xmax + 20% and has a surface area advantage. It is the original 13.5" high excursion woofer ;)

agreed, I saw a 13W7 on amazon for 599 or 699 + shipping. but figured, even if the specs on the 13av was HALF accurate e.g. half xmax - i figure I could make it up by buying a second driver for a total of 700 shipped.

but about the surface area, the w7 uses a bigger cone because it has hidden driver screws (or whatever you call those that hold the driver to the box) - advantage in cone area and surround size + aesthetics.

honestly though. i don't know how to build the box for this. the plans by eD are with 1" MDF ... I have half inch and 3/4 inch plywood available. hopefully eD can share plans with me that utilize half inch and 3/4 inch materials... if not, this driver is cool enough to put on your desk, hooked to an amp playing tones

There is nothing wrong with using 3/4 void free plywood (cabinet grade) instead of 1" MDF or 3/4" MDF. Just be sure to use adequate bracing. If you are ambitious you could laminate the panels to make them all 1.5" thick. ;)

I have seen a 13W7 literally rip an enclosure apart because the guy was too cheap to have a custom enclosure made with adequate bracing.

I was shocked at the affordability of the driver though. Hopefully it is of linear design.

they say it's the driver with the "better" SQ as compared to their existing flagship 18"

i'm thinking of doubling up on the plywood like you said, and maybe use steel angle bars for support/bracing (to save on enclosure volume)

That thing looks like quite the whomper Mike, you'll have fun w/that. :D

While the eD 13av.2 looks quite taller and has a wider surround, it reminds me of my TC-12 OEMs from TC Sounds. The size and style of each is quite unique, but when looking at the specs of the 13av.2 and build quality, the TC-12 seemed very similar. Here's some pics of the TC-12 if you're not familiar w/it:

is it really ok to place a driver upside down? wont it squish the surround?

except for the basket arms, it does look similar ... what's the TC12 closest to todays design? or was it used in the SVS Ultra?

I wouldn't suggested for an extended period, but nah, the surround on those things are beasts. You'd really have to beat on the surround or cones to do any kind of damage.

The basket is very different, I think as you mentioned, it was used by SVS in the Ultras, though this design definitely differs. It's an amp hog, not very efficient at all, but even in a small sealed enclosure (16 in. cube), it gets down almost to 20Hz w/room gain. I could be wrong, but I don't think TC/Audipulse makes anything like it, it was an OEM speaker for an undisclosed manufacturer that they had a decent surplus for, so they sold them until they were gone.

When the specs for the eD 13av.2 came out, I did some comparisons. The 13av.2 seemed slightly better numbers, but for the $199 price tag TC sold these for, I didn't fully appreciate them until I did some builds and looked to see what else what out there that compared.

Do you have any plans for the 13av.2 yet? I think you mentioned a sealed unit at one point, I have no doubt that'll do very well in any sealed enclosure.. ;) -TD
