Has anybody here tried the Elektron EHP-606 High Definition Network Media Player? I have a full flegged music server in my family room but I just want something simple in my bedroom. Something that will allow me to access my FLAC collection or play a stored video. Having a usable remote is a must as is HDMI 1.3a. The only review that I've found seems positive but with a few caveats.

My budget for the project is $500. $250 for the device plus $140 for a 1.5TB HD and $75 for a 802.11n USB dongle.

I've also looked at some of the Atom powered PCs and darn few of them seem to have digital video, or if they do then they go over budget, don't have a usable remote, or have cooling issues. I'm open to suggestions.

I'm open to suggestions.

You can go for an Egreat product. They are similar to the eHP-606 and popcorn family as they all use the same firmware and chipset. I have a EG-M32B and an EG-M34A (small steramer like WD TV) and they all work great. check them out at http://www.egreathd.com

Thank you for the feedback. I'll check out your suggestion and continue looking at options. The one thing that I'm sure of is that I do not want a second full fledged media PC and this is looking like an ideal option if they work as advertised. 95% of it's usage will be playing FLAC files with no more than 5% video.

eGreat M34A. No need for anything else. 606 does the same thing but costs more.

Thanks for the reply. No problems playing FLACs? It accepts an internal hard drive? Who did you buy it from?

No internal hard drive capability. If you need that, stay away. I run everything over network.

FLAC I'll confirm tonight if you want, but I'm sure it played my FLACs.

I bought it for $159 + shipping = $170 from the egreat site directly. One of their sites is selling it for $149 + shipping.

I'd be grateful if you could test with a FLAC. To be honest I'd just as soon stream over my home network if the performance is there. Unfortunately in that room I'm limited to home-plug networks speeds which which isn't all that fast, but may be just fast enough. Adding an 802.11n bridge for that room brings me up to the cost of a Popcorn Hour A-110 with WN-100 802.11n adaper built in.

BTW the price on the egreat has dropped to $140. I'm really tempted.

Test FLAC tonight. And what is home-plug? If you mean power line networking, it's plenty fast for streaming audio. So is wired 100Mb. I stream 1080p with TrueHD to this thing, 45GB BD rips, and they play without a hiccup over Cat5e. Wireless G streams audio even.

All, expect a full review of the eGreat EG-M34a soon. I'll take requests for testing. I will be hooking up a Linksys Wireless-N USB adaptor to test wireless performance for those that care, a full BD rip with TrueHD, and FLAC audio (sholling requested).

FLAC Support

I can confirm FLAC support!

On another note, firmware enabling DTS downmixing has been released, so this device is officially THE network media streamer of choice.

Thank you! I'll put it on my buy list for next month.
