Ed McMahon Passes Away!

Folks, I am sorry to report that Ed McMahon passed away today at the age of 86! At times, I found him quite funny while he was on the Johnny Carson show. My heart and prayers goes out to his friends and family. RIP! Here is a link:

They were a great team for many many years. I still remember laughing at the Great Sarnac routines where Ed would hold up an envelope and Johnny, wearing a turban would tell what was in it.

Ed: holds up envelope
Johnny: Marcus Welby and Doris Day
Ed: opening and reading the note inside. 'Name a surgeon and a virgin.'

great stuff.

Each night Ed would announce and hold up 'the last envelope'
Crowd cheers that the routine is finally ending
Johnny would relpy with a clever insult to the crowd.

Sad to see him go.

He set the bar for late night talk show co-hosts.

IMO, no one has come close to the bar since his departure from the Tonite Show.

Every time some one I grew up watching passes on it makes my age and mortality that much more recognizable.

Speaking of 'Johnny' ... he has never been replaced. I expect Conan to do a fairly good job, but not everyone likes his brand of humor.
I wanted to like Letterman, but he bumbles too much and never quite recovers. Best thing about that show is Paul and his band.

Leno was good, a bit sharp at times, but knew just when to cut it off.

Carson reached across all lines with his humor, was never insulting and quite apolitical. Plus, he could laugh at himself, something that you don't see as often anymore. I still miss the guy, and the 'team' was priceless.

Very nice write-up. I agree in that both Johnny and Ed were one of a kind. That is, they both seemed to fit each other very well-so much so that even to this day it has not been duplicated. That should tell you something!
