Eagles – Farewell I Tour: Live from Melbourne (DTS) Review

Together again, they embarked on the highly successful Hell Freezes Over tour. To mark the occasion they recorded a live TV special for TV, later released to video. The Hell Freezes Over DVD became highly regarded in the home theater community for its outstanding fidelity, particularly in its DTS incarnation. It has since become a mainstay with countless magazines who use it as source material for product reviews. Now, 11 years later, the Eagles have again released a concert DVD, and John Hopkins takes a look and listen to see how it fares.

I have enjoyed the HFO DVD but don't think I'll be purchasing the sequal....too much of the same thing.

I started a thread awhile ago after i bought this DVD. I do agree with some of this review but for the most part I disliked this recording.

Let me first start off by saying I love the Eagles. I have all their albums and of course, HFO. It is my reference DVD and besides "Led Zeppelin" it is probably my favorite concert DVD.

This Farewell 1 is so cheesy it should have come with crackers and a bottle of wine. Speaking of wine, I have to say a drunk Joe Walsh was much easier to take. Not to downplay his victory over his demons because alcoholism is nothing to laugh at but he was downright annoying and ridiculous in this concert. Seriously, I used to think Joe Walsh was the coolest guy in the band. Not now.

I agree the sound is not as good as HFO but that is an unfair comparison. Nothing compares to HFO. This DVD sounds very good in it's own right. Except the annoying trumpets and saxophones that added to the cheese factor. HFO sounded like it was recorded in your living room. This sounds like it was recorded in your basement. Overall, no complaints about the sound quality.

I agree that the new guy, or the studio musician who temporarily sat in, did an admirable job replacing Don Felder. Guitar solos were dead on and he seemed to gel with the band.

Don Henley, as my girlfriend pointed out, looks like he's trying to look 25 and should grow up.

Some of the worst parts for me were the crowd shots...over and over and over. Cougar after cougar. I am a romantic guy but I could not take anymore of the couples hugging and singing...again, added to the cheese factor.

Maybe I didn't buy into the fact it was a little more relaxed and the band was being goofy.

So overall, i have to say i was disappointed. This DVD will probably sit in my collection until maybe my dad comes over and wants to watch something he can relate to.

good review for a thoroughly enjoyable dvd. Goes to show you're never too old to have a good time and the band does seem to be enjoying themselves.

I was however distracted and irritated by so many audience shots, I actually paid to see the band on the dvd.

Don H. really should get a different hairstyle though, not flattering at all... but I hate that cut on any man.

Eagles......

When I posted my previous thread I had not read the entire review by John Hopkins.
I just wanted to say that I agree 100% with him, I have not the top rate equipment he does but in my humble system this DVD sounds very very good,
like everybody thinks, HFO is a lot better sounding due to the fact that it was recorded on a better and more suitable atmosphere.
I would love to see a review by Mr Hopkins of Boz Scaggs "Best of Live".
