this is basically a thread that compares the minimum and maxim DRC levels, just because i feel like posting it :p

Coldplay - 10dB of dynamic range, surprising because this is a "pop" band.
Antestor - an unfortunate 3dB
Tourniquet - a whopping 18dB
A Different Breed Of Killer - Strangley enough there are 3 seconds areas of the song that have dips of 12dB, but most of the time it sits in a 6dB zone.
Obscura - Suprisingly only 6dB, which i find strange because this recording sounds way more dynamic then it is. this is like my reference CD.
apparently not all DRC sounds terrible, i can certainly tell when each track has been compressed individually and then the mix itself compressed, i good example of this would be Miseration, the worst compression ever on a recording.

from what i have seen a 6dB range is tolerable, a 10dB range is fantastic, more range then that has me running for the volume control constantly, once you get to about 3dB things begin sounding like a jumbled mess. i understand they do this so that it can be played back on crappy systems, but the thing is the coldplay song i tested sounds fine on the POS in ceiling speakers at my workplace. not to mention, if someone is going to buy a cheapo single driver boombox, they probably dont give a damn how it sounds.
