DVR w/ Analog TV

I have an analog TV and currently subscribe to Direct TV. I am interested in getting a recording device such as a DVR or TiVo. I have no immediate plans to buy a HD TV to run the DVR or TiVO on. I know I will need a convertor box to convert the digital signal back to analog on this TV. However, I do have a small HD ready TV in my bedroom. When I called Direct TV I was told I could not run the DVR on the analog TV and I should A) Buy a flat screen TV then we can run DVR on this new TV because you can't run the DVR on the analog TV
or B) Run the DVR on the small flat TV which is HD ready

If you have the needed I/O connections, I don't see any problem.

A lot depends on what types of inputs your "Analog" tv offers and what ouputs your recording have.

I have friends with these and they don't have a digital TV. All that "digital" or "analog" refers to is the type of OTA tuner it uses.

They use composite or S-video connections.

I think the stubbling block for us, was being told we need to buy a digital TV otherwise the DVR won't work. My impression is that a lot of people go ahead and purchase the DVR and connect up to their analog TV (majority of people don't own a Digital TV) and don't think anything about it. Perhaps the gal at Direct TV had not encountered this question, because nobody asks the question the way we did.

You do not need a digital TV to use the DVR. The only way that could possibly be is if the DVR only had an HDMI output. Whoever told you that you need a new TV to use the DVR was very confused or simply did not know what he/she was talking about.
