HI
putting together a HTPC, the video card will be connected to my Yamaha amp[Component in]. through amps Monitor out[component out] my projector will be connected. the projector is capable of displaying 720P resolution.
To do this i will be using the DVI to Component cable, Will the projector display in true 720P resolution?.

Very few cards support a DVI to component cable, most require a converter.

What kind of DVI jack does the projector support? Component video is analog so your projector must support DVI-A.

My video card is XFX 9600Gt 512 MB. Which converter do you mean?
i was talking about a cable something like http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/component-dvi.html
I'm sorry you are out of luck! The sewers in Hollywood have done for you.

Your card has an HD digital DVI output. HD to analog HD conversion is no longer allowed by the unsatisfactory people of Hollywood. The converters are now banned.

Sorry, you will have to use an SD s-video connection. Your only hope of getting HD, is to buy a projector with HDMI and get an DVI to HDMI adapter. Hollywood has spoken.

TLS, would you expand on that, please? Are you sure his card can't do it? His card has two DVI-I jacks, and it's surprising to me that they'd put in DVI-I if it only supports DVI-D.

gumdigger, I recommend that you contact XFX support and ask them directly.

Apparently one of the DVI outputs is a DVI digital sub output, what ever that is.

Any how analog HD outputs have now passed the time where they are legal. All HD outputs have to be digital HDCP compliant ones now. That is the reason the converters are now apparently illegal. Eventually you will understand why I regard the Hollywood studios as stinking cesspools.

TLS, gotcha. I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I have some comments.

What site are you using to look this up? The DVI outputs are dual-link video ports. They are analog compatible and the cards (at least some retail boxes) include two DVI-to-VGA converters.

Well, I'm ignorant on this one. HDCP is one of the acronyms that I keep meaning to look into but haven't. So, I won't try to argue if the card can output video over a component cable connected to one of the DVI ports.

I still think an e-mail into XFX customer support is a good approach.

Is this basically the same principle as limiting HD output to HDMI only by preventing anything better than 480p from being passed over component?

No, component video cables can pass 1080p and beyond with no issues but the manufacturers don't support 1080p over component on DVD players because it is analog and therefore can be copied. You can still get HD using component if the source is 720p or 1080i - my cable box uses component video only and I get HD without any problems.

I am trying something similar, but would just like to find out if anyone actually knows of a card that does support the DVI to component cables?

This was the site I used to get the details. It is not clear to me that the DVI outputs an analog HD signal.

Even if it outputs via component cable in 720P do you think my amp will output it in 720P, because ultimatly i want to hook up my htpc to my amp from amp to my projector.

I have been on the GeForce website, and spent too much time on it. However I fail to see how the DVI outputs on that card could be analog. Both DVI outputs have the same specification. The reason is to support the use of two monitors, like the GeForce video card in my workstation. This is essentail for audio editing.

Your card is HDCP compliant and Vista compatible. The DVI converters according to the info on the site, are DVI to HDMI adapters. So they must be digital outputs.

Further the DRM that is intrinsic to Vista operating system does not allow the output of an HD analog output, and degrades all analog outputs to 480i whatever the source.

The DRM of Vista is draconian, and will not support professional digital audio. It automatically disconnects ALL professional ASSIO drivers. So I will be using XP in perpetuity or switch to MAC. This is just one more reason why I would shove all this DRM down the throats of the absolute Hollywood sewers.

As stated earlier, they are analog compatible. They are DVI-I ports (allow analog and digital output) and the card ships with DVI-to-VGA adapters. Please see the product sheet here or visit the general product site here.

gumdigger, I'll stick with my recommendation to contact the manufacturer directly. As for your receiver outputting 720P, I didn't see the owners manual on the Yamaha site, but the manual should include that information. If you can't find it in there, please give us a shout back and I'll dig deeper and try to find a copy of the manual.

amazing how its all setup. btw i was thinking over the s-video output and how it can give out so much resolution, then i looked closly it wasnt ordinary 4pin sivdeo output on the card its a 7pin connector.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svideo#7_pin_mini-DIN
so by the looks of it i will be using that for my UNPROTECTED high def videos and for HDCP fussy stuff i will be using HDMI direct to my tv because will full HD.

A UK site states it does the upconversion in RXV657 AMP http://www.yamaha-uk.com/av_amps_receivers/?product_id=57

Excellent. Nice find. It also says that it's 720P compatible, and if that's for the component inputs, then you're set as far as the receiver is concerned.
well it cannot be anything else, because i dont have HDMI !.
i will reply back once everything is installed and tell you if it actually works or not.

If it's in a computer with the Vista operating system then it will output at 480i in analog.
