I've been plugging this site for ages - www.dvdscan.com. They do the most in-depth analysis of DVD technical quality I've come across.

Their recommendations include Star Wars: A New Hope and Return of the Jedi, both region 1 NTSC. These - as you'd expect from the time it took to release them - are reference quality in sound and picture. I saw the redone (I think) Star Wars New Hope on digital TV. It does look different to the previous re-release, with better colour saturation and quite noticeable redubbing in the dialogue. The improved colour quality is something to do with the fact that the film it was shot on was prone to fading. This has been corrected.

The Japanese Superbit release of Gladiator (region 2, NTSC) is also reference quality in sound and picture. I own the region 2 edition and it's the best sounding DVD I've got. The Back to the Future trilogy is one of the best region 2 PAL releases.

If you REALLY want to test out a system's capability, get a copy of the HD-mastered version of Resident Evil.

There are several places to look:

check the full-screen flash of Alice's eye when she first wakes up. looks for sharp definition between the color lines.

any of the computer displays generated by the Red Queen uses ever-decreasing font sizes in both red and white letters. See what the smallest size you can read. this will test your resolution, especially at the outer edges of the screen, which are normally the worst for resolution. this DVD goes 16:9, so it will check both the top and bottom of your screen, with no wasted black bars for inperfections to hide in.

look at the name tags on the commando team when they first enter the mansion. the lighting is bad and the names are black-on-dark grey. this will test your contrast.

as a final check, when Alice comes out of the hospital, there is a split-second where you should be able to read the name on the badge of the doctor's lab coat she has stolen.

Actually they are in 480i. The progressive scan rate is a selectable format with the DVD player (not the DVD disc).

There's several superbit movies out there that are great for showing off your system. Snatch and Men In Black was ggod recently in Superbit. A great movie from the audio side was Batman Begins

I second that about the Pixar films. Toy Story 2 was awesome on my setup for both audio and video quality.

Superbit: 5th Element
I-Robot
Chronicles of Riddick
Finding Nemo

Of my collection I'd say its a three way tie with Finding Nemo, SW EPisode III: REturn of the Sith, The 5th Element.
