DVD video calibration

I know there is a DVD out that helps calibrate the picture on your TV. Do they work well with current HD sets? I need to calibrate the picture on my 50" panny plasma so I can get the best picture possible. I know it is a matter of preference also, but I'd like to try it out.

With a decent progressive scan DVD player and a calibration disc, you will definitley see the benefit on an HD display. Calibration is not a matter of preference - the test patterns are intended to give you the best possible picture when used correctly. Avia, Digital Video Essentials, etc...

I see, thanks for the info. I was always under this assumption.

These discs have pretty good explanation how to use them.
