In an effort to be frugal we're spending a small fortune. The laser on our 18 mo. old Zenith DVD/VCR (ZDX313) blew out so we thought we'd be clever and purchase a cheap DVD player (Memorex MVD2042) and route it through the Zenith which is connected to our receiver and cable TV. The audio works superbly however we can't seem to get the Zenith to ackowledge the disc from the new DVD player. We're purchased S and RGB cables and tried both options of connecting to the Zenith to no avail. The Zenith indicator always reads "no disc" even though we have a disc playing in the Memorex. Our TV has only a cable hookup so direct connection isn't an option. Any ideas??

Your DVD player cannot accept a video input. The VCR section can accept a composite video input, but not the DVD player portion.

If you are trying to run the new dvd player via the older combi unit try this. Connect a set of AV cables (yellow/White/Red) from the DVD player to the VCR line in connection. Turn the VCR section of the combi player on and turn it to the L-1 or input channel. From there you should get a picture and sound. You may have copy-protection problems. I have done this recently for a customer w/o any problem though.
