I am new at this so bear with me. We had purchased a Samsung all in one home theater system which included the DVD player/surround sound and the speakers with no seperate A/V receiver. After three years the DVD player went down. We replaced the system with a Sony HDMI - DVP-NS75H DVD player and now want to purchase the receiver. I am told that the Sony STR-DG500 is compatible. My main question now is the speaker system!
The original Samsung speaker system (6 speakers) are wired and set in the walls and ceilings. Will they be able to be hooked up to the new Sony receiver and if not can we use at least the wiring for the speakers if we have to purchase new ones? Thanks for your help!

Receiver and speaker connections

Jodo,
Any HT receiver is compatable with your Sony DVD player. Some will allow you to connect HDMI video through the receiver and others will require you to connect HDMI directly to the TV. Check out the Products from Yamaha, Denon and Pioneer in your price range.

Concerning the speaker connections, these should be fine and each pair of speaker wires will connect to the binding posts on the back of the new receiver. The sub, however, is questionable. Receivers are designed for a line level connection to a powered subwoofer. A powered sub will have a seperate power cord. Many HDIBs have an unpowered sub which has speaker wire connections to an amp that is built into the receiver/DVD player. If this is the case with your system, you will need to upgrade the sub.
