Amazing how quickly my girlfriend can fill up the supposed 80hrs of recording time with home decorating shows . The thing that is unclear to my is this: Are there recorders out there that will record a Dolby 5.1 signal? Or stretching things a bit, DTS? And at what price level does this happen? As a base line take this recorder for example. While the price caught my eye I'm far from sold on it. The primary use for the DVD recorder would be for more long term storage of cable movies. Preferably those that are already stored on the DVR.

JVC Banned Jan 23, 2004 319 0 0 Jul 16, 2005 #4 DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are the two main (free) programs needed. DVD Shrink will compress the video, to fit on one disc. Decrypter will not. Decrypter is best for burning Double layer discs, with no compression. Decrypter includes the burning software. Shrink does not. Shrink works best with Nero, but will work with other burning software too, I think. Know that Nero and Roxio will not live and work on the same computer. It must be one or the other.
