Ok Im not sure if this is where to post this so if it isnt Im sorry. Anyway after my "Who had the BIGGEST..." thread I confirmed my thought that I have a small DVD collection. So the question is how do you all store these huge collections. Im asking cause Ive out grown my cheap rack and want to get something bigger and nicer but havent found anything. Is my only hope to build something? I really hope not.

Thanks,
Sean

I store my dvds in 2 alphebatized 250 disc dvd cases. I store the unused dvd cases in a box in the attic. It really works pretty well because if someone wants to borrow a dvd then they can't even if I wanted them too because there is no case to carry them in.

I store my DVDs alphabetically as well. I've got two wood multimedia racks, as pictured. They're billed as able to hold about 240 DVDs each. Very handy, nice looking, and sadly no longer available from Fellowes, the company that made 'em. Which is too bad, because I've just started on the fourth shelf of the second rack, and I'll need another of these babies soon.

cheers,
supervij

Supervij,
http://www.racksandstands.com has cd/dvd racks exactly like the ones pictured. Wood Technology makes quality stands of various designs out of solid hardwood and are relatively inexpensive. I've outgrown my current media cabinet once again, but this time I am getting the local Furniture In The Raw store to build one to my specs rather than buying another Wood Technology rack.

I'm kinda sure you were waiting for my response.
OK here it goes, I tried the books. But the page flipping became a pain. My mother still has the books, she kept them for her cd collection (about 240). However she had started with movies in them, and decided it was a pain as well. She likes my system better. I'm getting to it...
Anyhow, I tried the racks, problem there is to many dvd's take up a lot of rack space. So I scratched that idea.
So then I tried the small jewel cases (only a 50 pack) problem there is you don't know where the dvd's are and they take up space as well.
Anyhow, while at a computer show I saw a filing system. BTW, I was just about to make the same thing... To bad.

The boxes are very well built. They are plastic, they have little rubber feet, the tops have indents for the rubber feet - so they can be stacked. The boxes also have a lead weight in the back of the box.... Why, well if you by chance open both drawers the box will not tip over. Also the drawers are spring loaded, yes one button press and the drawer pops out.
The leaflets inside are a sort-of cotton/felt and do not scratch the dvd. The leaflets are double sided, so a dvd on both sides with the cotton/felt liner in between.

They take up very little room considering the amount of dvd's they hold. Each box holds 160 dvd's. Now you say; But you said you have 1600 dvd's...
Well at the moment I have 8 boxes (1280 dvd's) Only 6 of the boxes are pictured. The other 2 are in the other room. Also for some larger sets, I did not go with the boxes. James Bond set (21 dvd's) and other sets, are in special dvd holders that will hold up to 8 discs at a time. (I will get into how they are catergorized soon) Also, I have gotten to the point of adding extra leaflets in each box (yes they can be bought seperately)

Back to the boxes, as stated they are very sturdy. They also have a # on each leaflet. #1? for the front dvd #2? for the back, and so on...... Each box is numbered up to 160, 80 on one side 80 on the other. So I had to do a little printing and slide new numbers for the next and each box 161+. Now that I have done this, it would have been easier to just say box A, box B, etc...
Something like B121, or D152. Then I would not have had to number them, but sometimes I'm a little anal...

Now how to catergorize them. Well as the numbers above state, there were a few more things to consider. How to get the dvd I wanted.. Very easy. Just as I got new dvd's I had alphabatized them on the computer. When I got the boxes I started to put a # in front of the movie. So the 'manual' is now printed every once in awhile when I have enough updates to justify a new 'manual'. The manual consists of about 17-18 pages. It is alphabatized, and slightly catergorized. For sets, I put a color on them as red. However blue could be a set as well. The thing with blue is that these are movies that a -12yr old is allow to watch. So all the blues are for the most part childrens movies. However some 'Disney' movies I deemed not good for children under twelve. At least not without the parents permission. Like Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy, and Harry Potter etc.. But Bambi, Herbie the Love Bug, 101 Dalmations, etc.. are ok. This way when a friend comes over with a 8yr old, I can say pick anything Blue...(trust me theres alot)

More catergorizing. Well along with the alphabetical/numeral system. I finally found (thanks to other members) a program that will help catalog your dvd's as well. This includes time, genre, actors, format, sound, etc...
And if I can't choose something off the printed manual, then I may do a quick search for a comedy, action, drama, etc.. with the computer (once dvd names are loaded, it will do an auto search at IMDB, and fill in the details. After that you will not need to go online, so once it is done once - Its done...)

I don't write reviews well, and I am sure there are spelling and grammar mistakes. So be easy on me.

The pics below, show some of the boxes. They are quite dusty, because of the work going on in the condo. BTW, these boxes would easily be able to be built into a wall. I have showed a pic of #665 & #666. I am guessing you people can figure out #666. I had put it there intentionaly. Yes for those who guessed it The Omen is in that spot. Also for size comparison, I have put a 1/18 car in the pic. (Scarface Cadillac). I have also included a pic of my manual, which has gotten to thick for staples. Next I will have to buy a hole puncher, and put it into a small binder.

Well guys thanks for all the input. I Liked the Boltz stands that Duff showed me but they are a lil pricey. But I guess thats to be expected at this level. Brian I really apreciarte your write up on what you use. Those also seem like a great Idea and a good posiblity but I have a few questions. First off it seems like a big pain in the *** to add a DVD mainly because there is 2 per leaflet. As you know I also keep a computer record of all my DVD's and I havent gone to genra yet but they are all in alfabetical order and are now highlighted as to thier best sound (I.E. DTS is one color THX is one 6.1 is another and so on) So I already have the booklet for someone to check out mainly cause I dont let any one thouch the rack or my equipmnt and also cause its eiser that way. Also what to do with all the DVD Cases. But the biggest thing is you neve said who makes them and where to get them price nothing. :D

MDS, thanks bunches! I was wondering where I might find another one of these guys. I like the design, it's easy-peasy to put together, it holds a lot, and it's cheap! And I like that, sitting on the couch, I can just glance over at the racks and see the whole collection. Not to take anything away from brian's boxes.

cheers,

Your not taking any of my thunder???
The boxes are from a company called Hipcie and they sell for a measily 24.95 each...
Much cheaper than that rack that holds about 1000 dvd's for about 650.00
I like the fact, that they will look nice built into a wall right next to the A/V rack that will be built in as well.
